Tesla to build its first sub-$27K car in Germany, report claims

Posted on:

Tesla plans to build a 25,000 euro electric car at its Berlin Gigafactory, new report claims.
Tesla Gigafactory Berlin

Tesla is planning to build its first €25,000 ($26,867) car in Germany.

This is according to a Reuters report published Monday, which cites an unnamed source with knowledge of the matter. Reportedly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said it himself at his recent visit to the company’s Gigafactory in Germany, located in Grünheide, near Berlin.

Details are painfully scarce; we don’t know when the production would begin, or anything about the vehicle itself.

Tesla’s $5.5 billion Gigafactory Berlin currently produces the company’s most popular model, the Tesla Model Y.

That Tesla is aiming to produce a car that costs around €25,000 isn’t a secret; in 2020 Elon Musk said it’s been Tesla’s “dream” to built such an affordable electric vehicle. But the Model 2, which is what the cheapest Tesla is likely to be called, keeps getting pushed into the future.

It’s also worth noting that Musk promised the new Tesla car would be built in the company’s upcoming Gigafactory Mexico, which was later apparently changed to Gigafactory Texas.

The “cheap” Tesla is one of two new cars Tesla is planning to build, with the other being a robotaxi, a car specifically designed to haul passengers autonomously.

In any case, the next Tesla car will almost certainly be a very different, far more expensive vehicle. The company is planning to have a delivery event for its Cybertruck SUV on Nov. 30, at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. We don’t know the Cybertruck’s exact price yet, but it’s likely to be among the pricier Tesla vehicles you can buy.
