Mill food recycling bin review: The easiest indoor composter alternative, especially if you don’t have a garden

At-home composting has made serious moves in the past few years.

The most revolutionary was the move indoors. Electric countertop composters like the Vitamix FoodCycler and our beloved Lomi consolidated the composting process (which previously required outdoor space, several months of manual stirring, probably worms, and likely too much patience) to an appliance that doesn’t hog much more counter space than an Instant Pot. Instead of sitting idly and waiting to be emptied like the humble stainless steel countertop food scrap bin, they recycle the food scraps to a dirt-like material in a matter of hours.

Despite these advances in accessibility and simplicity — two major factors necessary to make the average person consider separating food scraps in their kitchen — this approach to countertop composting poses a recurring pickle: what to do with that material once it’s made. Mill fills the gap.

How does Mill work?

Mill is a large electric indoor food recycling bin that sits on the floor like a trash can instead of on the counter. Like an in-home composter, it’s a less-smelly place than the trash to throw plate scrapings, forgotten fridge leftovers, old pet food, and the butt of the bread that everyone keeps bypassing. Unlike composting, Mill technically isn’t conducting decomposition or creating a nutrient-rich substance that can be added to soil. Rather, Mill dries your scraps into dehydrated grounds that look and feel similar to dirt — literally your food without the moisture content — in just a few hours.

But with those basics covered, Mill really starts to pull away from the competition. The most obvious physical difference is that Mill sits on the floor rather than the countertop and is basically like having another full-sized trash can in your kitchen. I love that opening the lid doesn’t require a hand to unscrew — the presser foot opens it for you.

Instead of waiting on you to press a button when the bucket is full like its countertop competitors, Mill automatically starts dehydrating and churning whatever you tossed in it that day. You can customize the starting time in the app, and I chose 10 p.m. to try to ensure that everyone in my household was done eating and snacking for the night. The sound of the lid locking was a bit of a jump scare the first few times, but then I literally just started using it to tell time. Oh, Mill just locked? Maybe don’t start a movie right now.

Of course, there have been several instances where somebody has something to put in the Mill after it locks. Conveniently, you can pause the cycle to unlock the lid by holding the button down. Mill automatically resumes afterward.

I actually don’t know exactly how long Mill runs overnight but it’s always done by the time I’m up for work the next morning. It’s also so much quieter than I expected (given the Lomi’s haunted house-esque creaking), producing a low whir that I only really notice when I’m standing near it.

Mill takes almost any food scrap, as well as most napkins and paper towels

Mill is super versatile in the variety of food you can put in it. The “yes” list is pretty self-explanatory and easy to remember, but you can get a quick refresher by glancing at the magnet that Mill sends with your bin. Being forced to glance at the magnet every time we open the fridge really helps to normalize separating food scraps in my apartment’s kitchen routine — scraping our plates into Mill is a reflex, just like the automatic reflex to throw a metal can into the recycling bin instead of the trash.

The fact that Mill’s list of what can go in the bin is heavier on the “yes” side than the “no” side also makes it easier to remember to use it over the trash can in the first place, especially for the people in the household who aren’t the hardcore eco-friendly ones.

I remember my days of saving food scraps in a bag in my freezer to drop off at my local food scrap collection location in Brooklyn. Having to follow so many rules and Google what was acceptable on such a regular basis was a pain in the ass. “No meat, no dairy or cheese, no fats or oils, no cooked foods.” OK, so do you have to completely trash a salad if it has a few drops of dressing on it? Are steamed vegetables fine or not? Are you not even going to mention grains? Also, nobody knows what the hell carbon-rich or nitrogen-rich materials are. Explain it to me like I’m 5.

Most any food things can be thrown into Mill, and most of the “no” section is composed of non-food items that seem like common sense. There are some items, both food and non-food, that can go into Mill on a case-by-case basis, the terms of which are explained in the app when you search that item. For example, paper towels and napkins are safe as long as they’re 100 percent paper and don’t have cleaning product on them. The one main difference is that, while machines like Lomi and compost piles being used for fertilizer can use plant clippings, things like fallen houseplant leaves and yard scraps should be kept out of Mill.

If there’s further confusion about whether something specific can or can’t go in, it’s almost guaranteed to be listed in the Mill app, where you can type in the most random of food items and get a solid yes or no answer. I did this for the less obvious ones, like pet food (if you think wet cat food smells bad in the can, just wait until it’s been chilling in the trash for two days) and mixed-ingredient leftovers like pasta with cheese and sauce.

Mill proves how much it really is consolidating your footprint by how long it takes for the bin to fill up. It was a bottomless pit for the first three months I was using it, holding weeks’ worth of daily food scrap dumping from three people and requiring literally no effort on my end. Once the grounds weighed 9 pounds and hit the green line inside, the app let me know it was time to empty.

From there, your only job is to pack your milled results into one of the pre-labeled packages that should have arrived in a separate delivery from the giant Mill box itself. These ship flat, so you’ll have to unfold one and place a planted-based plastic liner in it (also free with your membership). The shipping box can technically hold two full batches and the grounds don’t smell bad at all, so if you have a place to store the half-full box until your bin fills again, you’ll have to mail less often.

After scheduling a USPS pickup or dropping the package off at the post office, your scraps are Mill’s problem — and Mill ensures that your food scraps are actually being recycled.

The way that Mill processes your scraps on demand on a daily basis is so cool and so different. But that’s hardly Mill’s sole unprecedented flex. Arguably even more impressive is the fact that Mill is so dedicated to recycling food that it puts your food waste directly back into the life cycle — into the belly of a chicken, actually.

The beef that any average Earth enjoyer has with the beef industry is spotlighted by countless documentaries and Impossible Whopper commercials. While cow farming is by far the biggest agricultural hazard for the climate, they’re not the only livestock practice with a hefty carbon footprint. A study about chicken and salmon farming published by Current Biology in February 2023 asserts that much of the emission — as much as 55 percent — associated with poultry farming comes from feeding them.

Factory-farmed chicken feed largely comes from grain and soya. Growing either requires mass amounts of land (often gained through deforestation) and water. The boom of demand for soybean products (ironically, the main base ingredient in a lot of plant-based meat) from humans and now chickens, apparently, is an increasing area of concern on top of the demand for the meat itself.

So, by rerouting your Mill grounds into the hands of farmers as an ingredient for their chicken feed, Mill’s closed-loop service can be thought of as an added measure of sustainability on top of the food scraps it diverts from landfills. According to an interview with NBC, the partnership with farmers also helps to subsidize the membership.

Mill’s mail-in collection and repurposing of your food scraps you make is the “No garden, no problem,” take that I could imagine a ton of apartment-dwelling Earth stans have been waiting for. Creating nutrient-rich fertilizer at home isn’t exactly a solution if you’re not maintaining any vegetation at home. That was one of my biggest gripes with the Lomi — plus the fact that the setting that works with paper products won’t produce fertilizer that should go into soil at all. Instead, they suggest putting that finished compost in the green bin. You mean, the green bin and curbside composting system that a ton of towns don’t have? Suggesting taking them to a local compost drop-off location kind of defeats the purpose of having a machine to do the composting at home.

How much does Mill cost?

Mill’s pricing diverges from the one-time, upfront payment situation that you’d expect. The bin itself is free, but it won’t ship without your subscription to an annual or monthly Mill service plan. The service plan covers optional pickups of those pre-labeled food ground packages whenever you want, connection to a support team of real people, plus maintenance like filters, repairs, and even bin replacement.

Here’s how the costs shake out: The cheaper of the two is the annual plan, which will run you $33 per month (billed upfront at $396 annually with free bin delivery) or the monthly plan, which is $45 month to month ($540 for a year) plus a $75 bin delivery. If you go with the annual plan, recycling food with Mill costs about dollar a day.

Taking all that Mill’s service does while it’s in your kitchen and beyond into account — plus the fact that it’s the only consumer food recycling option on the market that’s doing this — a dollar a day could be totally digestible for anyone with a somewhat disposable budget. If you don’t already pay for trash as part of your current utility bill (like I luckily don’t), you could also think of Mill as claiming that chunk that many others already have to budget for.

No, the loophole you’re thinking of won’t work, either. You can’t simply stop paying for the service while keeping the bin for free. Membership cancellation is only effective once Mill has received your returned bin, which you’ll have 30 days to send back after requesting to cancel your membership.

Mill versus Lomi and Vitamix: Cost is (almost) its only downside

Having Mill in my kitchen has been such a positive, hands-off experience that it hasn’t really sparked any noteworthy complaints. I’d be willing to bet that that’s what everyone will say — until the one-year mark rolls around and several hundred dollars disappear from your bank account again. The whole “dollar a day thing” adds up quickly, especially when you consider that a single year of using Mill is basically as expensive as the full one-time purchase of an indoor countertop composter.

So if you’re interested in composting inside your home but aren’t yet set on the specific machine, your main options aside from Mill are countertop composters like the Lomi, Reencle, or Vitamix FoodCycler. They operate similarly in that they still do the composting inside your home within a matter of hours — they just sit on your countertop and hold a much smaller capacity. These three go for around $400 to $600 at full price, maybe dropping by $100 or so when on sale. You’ll only have to pay that large chunk once rather than annually like you would with Mill, though most home composters do require purchase of filter and pod replacements every few months.

This isn’t to say that I don’t understand why Mill costs a bit more. It’s providing a wickedly convenient recurring service that no competitors can provide, and you’re paying for the experts to deal with your finished grounds rather than having to figure out what to do with it. I get it, but I’d be remiss not to put it into perspective, especially with steady inflation making us more closely considering what’s a necessity and what’s not.

Mill also sits on the floor while these competitors sit on the counter, and which would work better for you probably depends on the layout of your kitchen and whether you can give up counter space or floor space.

In my experience with having both Mill and Lomi in my apartment for several months, Lomi had several maintenance blips that required part replacement. Mill hasn’t glitched once. My guess is a lot of people would be willing to pay more for less upkeep and fewer chats with customer service agents.

Mill versus saving scraps for local pickup or drop-off

FWIW, a ton of people already pay for compost pickup. For instance, one service near me in Philadelphia charges $12 per month for every-other-week pickup, or $18 per month for weekly pickup. Mill’s service cost obviously still surpasses that by a bit, but paying to compost isn’t totally unheard of.

Then, there are the households that definitely want to divert their food scraps from the landfill but can’t decide whether it’s worthwhile to pay for their own composter or just take their scraps to a community compost site.

I just felt a shiver down my spine. Oh, no, I’m not cold — I’m just reflecting on my time saving my food scraps in my last two apartments. The smell that punched me in the face every time I took the lid off of the stainless steel countertop bin or the mystery drop of melty rotten freezer scrap juice that just fell on my foot. Four years of dedication to being a compost girlie means four years of experimenting with different methods of saving food scraps to take somewhere. After all of that, I can confidently confirm that being able to do the whole process in my home has been the easiest, the least gross, and so, so worth it.

Putting a number on Mill’s environmental benefits

I know, know — in a perfect world, a sleek, advanced system like Mill would be as standard and accessible in a home as curbside garbage collection is. It seems like we may actually be on the path to that (if you think that’s delusional, let me be delusional). States like California and Vermont haven’t yet awarded each resident and business with a Mill, but they do have statewide mandatory compost laws in place. Cities like San Fransisco and Portland are doing the same with citywide rules, and Brooklyn residents have access to citywide curbside composting as of October 2023. That’s supposed to expand to all of New York City by the end of 2024.

But until then, recycling food at home with something like Mill is still so impactful, even if you’re the only person you know who has one.

In case you’re blissfully unaware of just how detrimental our food waste habit really is, let’s get into it quickly. It’s estimated that the average American household wastes almost a third of the food it acquires each year, and that’s obviously not counting the contributions of food waste from businesses like restaurants.

When food rots, it produces methane: a gas that’s 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period after reaching the atmosphere. The combination of households, restaurants, and more creates 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions — equivalent to the exhaust 37 million cars would create.

This is a statistic that Mill is aiming to shrink. One preliminary study done by Mill suggested that a year with Mill can avoid about a half-ton of greenhouse gas emissions at the single household level. Just think of the impact that could be had if Mill achieves its ultimate goal of expanding to the business level.

Is the Mill bin worth it?

Considering I spent my own money to purchase the free test unit I was sent to keep using Mill after I was done testing it, yes, I’d say Mill is worth it. It’s truly in a league of its own in the way that it’s currently the only at-home option on the market that will repurpose your food scraps. And though that aspect of it may sound a little fancy or obscure, Mill is ridiculously straightforward and easy to use. It’s literally like an extra 13-gallon trash can in your kitchen that takes itself out. Need I circle back to how much less rancid it is to discard food?

Mill simultaneously stirs hope and frustration because it shows just how easy it could and should be to not send every unwanted crumb from your kitchen to the landfill. Seriously, imagine if having a sustainable waste system like this at home was as normalized and accessible as trashing everything is. To me, it posed the daydream situation of how quickly America could turn its food waste shit show around if composting (or a composting-adjacent approach, like Mill’s) was funded on the micro level, rather than shifting the responsibility to the average person and whether or not they can figure out a convenient composting solution on their own dime.

Sex and reproduction studies in space offer confusing results

Few sex and reproduction studies have happened in space. One thing is clear: the lack of gravity and a protective atmosphere can be dangerous.

Nadezhda used to scuttle around the drab halls of a bureaucratic building in southwestern Russia before she was recruited for an unprecedented experiment in space.

Suddenly, her life of anonymity — just trying to avoid hunger and the thick rubber tread of a boot — was elevated for a higher purpose. She would become a mother, and she would show the world what happens when multiples are conceived in outer space.

When she returned, everyone at the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Voronezh, Russia, waited and watched Nadezhda, whose name means “hope,” like the lower-than-lab-rat that she was.

Then, the day arrived: 33 cockroach babies were born, presenting unusual mutations. They were larger, ran faster, and even looked different from their brethren bugs on Earth. While the upper shells of the newborn critters are normally clear, Nadezhda’s brood was already sporting a dark reddish-brown coat.

“It’s like a space horror film in the making, when you think about it,” Alex Layendecker, founder of the Astrosexological Research Institute, told Mashable. “Two random cockroaches disappear into this spacecraft, and they just keep reproducing, and it compounds.”

But what Layendecker is talking about is not science fiction. The experiment sent up on Roscosmos’ Foton-M bio-satellite in 2007 is one of the few sex and reproduction studies conducted in space. The results are disturbing, and not just because the study involved one of the most despised pests on the planet. It’s a harbinger for the austere challenges space presents for sustaining Earth-based life. Without gravity and Earth’s atmosphere, a security blanket blocking the planet’s inhabitants from high doses of cosmic radiation, baby-making is quite onerous.

On the International Space Station, flying about 250 miles above Earth, astronauts are exposed to radiation levels 100 times higher than on the ground. Yet the space station is still within Earth’s magnetic field, which offers some protection from toxic cosmic rays. Imagine then how venturing out into deep space — like on a trip to Mars or a long stay at the moon — might accelerate damage to human cells.

“To do humans, an actual study with human cells and human embryos, obviously, there are all kinds of checks and balances. Most of the work is done with proxies,” said David Cullen, professor of astrobiology and space biotechnology at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. “By looking at mice (for example), you’re looking at humans indirectly.”

So far no mammals — or any animal with a backbone, for that matter — has completed its life cycle from conception to adulthood in space. There are only sparse, preliminary results on how space affects some of the critical phases of reproduction and early growth, such as fertilization, embryo development, pregnancy, birth, postnatal maturation, and parental care.


“It’s like a space horror film in the making.”

But there’s another problem: The data that do exist usually involve such small sample sizes that it’s difficult to extrapolate what the results would even mean for humans or any other species. Nearly all of the research has been on non-primate animals, with the exception of a human sperm study.

The first evidence of mating, fertilization, and hatching of a vertebrate animal’s eggs in space occurred in 1994 during a 15-day mission aboard NASA space shuttle Columbia.

“Who has had sex in space?” Dr. Shawna Pandya, director of medical research for Above Space Development, asked rhetorically while speaking on a South by Southwest panel in March. “It has been caught on tape, it has happened, and it was four Japanese Medaka fish, for those of you who are into that. Statistically speaking, at least one of you is.”

Medaka, also known as Japanese rice fish, usually live in small ponds, shallow rivers, and rice paddies. They were selected for a space experiment because the breed seems to be more tolerant of weightlessness, unbothered by the lack of a constant “up” or “down” in microgravity.

The experiment resulted in four fish laying 43 eggs. Of them, eight babies hatched in space, and another 30 were born after landing. The offspring seemed normal — with the expected numbers of germ cells found in the ovaries of the newly hatched — and some were able to have their own offspring upon their return to the planet as well.

But other fish studies conducted in spaceflight have led to offspring with bizarre mutations. Some young-adult fish have swum in tight circles or in sideways loops. Though U.S. researchers found no significant changes in systems that control balance and orientation among fish studied in spaceflight, Soviet scientists found marked differences in how they formed.

“There have been wasp studies, mice studies, rodent studies, jellyfish, quail eggs. Any species you name, they’ve been studied on Shuttle, Mir, Skylab, [the International Space Station],” Pandya said. “And the data, at best, is conflicting.”

In an amphibian study two years later, four female African clawed frogs were injected with a hormone that triggers ovulation after reaching low-Earth orbit. NASA astronauts slathered sperm from male frogs onto the eggs, causing many to fertilize.

While the experiment was largely deemed a reproduction success story in the mass media, tadpoles raised in microgravity were documented as having enlarged heads and eyes in scientific journals. Some researchers who studied them in simulated weightlessness also observed these issues and suggested the super-sized heads may have been due to defects in the neural tube, which forms the early brain and spine. Across the board, it appears as though tadpole growth gets stunted, not just in space but also after they return to the gravity of Earth.

Why study fish and amphibians in space when the animal kingdom is full of species that more closely resemble humans? Mammals would be ideal, but experts say keeping them alive during long flights is complicated and expensive. Their embryos are also difficult to study in microgravity because they develop within a uterus. That makes it tricky for researchers to separate the influence of the mother’s body from the direct effects of weightlessness on the fetus.

In some cases, animals are picked based on logistics. For example, newts are considered a good model for space experiments because the females can retain live sperm after mating for up to five months. That large window of time allows scientists to inseminate them on Earth, but then have them go through fertilization, with the help of an injected hormone, later in space.

‘Sex geckos’ experiments in space

Reptiles are some of the least studied creatures in space, though thick-toed geckos have taken trips aboard Russia’s uncrewed Foton-M3 in 2007 and Bion-M1 in 2013. They were chosen because their sticky feet help them attach to surfaces in weightlessness. When the geckos returned, scientists found bits of partially eaten unfertilized eggs in their habitats.

It remains a mystery whether lizard reproduction can occur in space. In 2014, a 60-day spaceflight on the Russian Foton-M4, which caught the attention of John Oliver on HBO’s Last Week Tonight, was cut short due to problems with the mission, including a temporary loss of communication with the satellite. All five of the ornate day geckos aboard the uncrewed spacecraft, or “sex geckos” as Oliver called them, died before landing, likely because of freezing, according to later reports.

Quail eggs might also seem like a bonkers choice of animal for reproduction and development experiments in space, but studies date back to 1979 when the Soviet Union sent them aboard Cosmos-1129. Reports from TASS, the state-run news agency, said the Soviet space program was trying to figure out if quail could be a food source for cosmonauts. Apparently most of the eggs broke during the landing.

But they kept trying over the years. Though some chicks could make it through incubation, the hatch rates tended to be low, and many of the embryos showed defects in their eyes, brains, and beaks. Birds raised on the Mir space station also never pecked right, a possible sign of a balance problem. A long list of defects were noted over multiple experiments, including muscular dystrophy and underdeveloped thyroid glands.

Rodent reproduction experiments in space

Most of the previous mammal studies have involved rats. Despite NASA’s aversion to discussing and studying sex, the space agency and National Institutes of Health collaborated on space shuttle missions to study fetal development and postnatal health of rodents in space.

In two flights, 10 pregnant rats were launched midway through gestation and landed just a couple of days before the end of the full term. Rat pups born after the flights had delays in brain development and major sensory and motor systems, including in their eyes, ears, noses, and balance centers.

In a third rodent study, two litters each of five-day-old, eight-day-old, and 14-day-old pups flew in space. Though the oldest group fared better healthwise, only 10 percent of the five-day-olds survived. Among the eight-day-olds, 90 percent lived but had about 25 percent less body weight than normal. The 14-day-olds lived and were comparable to the same-age rat pups in the control group on Earth. This may mean that the space environment has an outsized negative impact on earlier stages of development.

But experts like Layendecker reiterate that not a single mammal has ever been born in space, so it’s anyone’s guess how fertilization and the forming of a placenta would occur away from our home planet.

“There’s not enough data from those experiments to really give us a substantive understanding of the whole problem,” he said.

NASA solar spacecraft keeps on going faster and faster and faster

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe spacecraft is speeding up as it orbits the sun. By late 2024, it will reach a whopping 430,000 miles per hour. The probe is capturing unprecedented data about our star.

Over the past couple years, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has continually smashed its own speed records. And in the next year, it will continue to break more records.

The agency’s well-fortified spacecraft is swooping progressively closer to the sun, and during each pass, picks up more speed. In 2018, soon after its launch, the probe became the fastest human-made object ever built, and by 2024 it will reach a whopping 430,000 miles per hour.

At such a speed, one could travel from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., in 20 seconds.

The spacecraft recently reached 394,736 mph. “It’s very fast,” Nour Raouafi, an astrophysicist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and project scientist for the mission, told Mashable.

The spacecraft, fitted with a thick heat shield, has been making passes through the sun’s outer atmosphere, also known as its corona. It’s the first mission to reach the corona, and the unprecedented data collected will help scientists forecast how eruptions from the sun’s surface will impact Earth, and answer research quandaries about the solar wind — the stream of particles and radiation constantly emitted by the sun.

“It’s like opening a new book that we’ve never read before,” Raouafi said.

How the solar probe goes so fast

Parker’s exceptional, increasing speed is an inevitable part of orbiting the sun, a sphere of hot gas 333,000 times as massive as our dense planet. For another perspective, 1.3 million Earths could fit inside the sun. Crucially, when you swing by such a massive and gravitationally powerful object, you pick up a lot of speed.

The spacecraft is now flying its 17th orbit around the sun, allowing the craft to boost its speed by over 240,000 mph since 2018. And out in space, there’s nothing to stop this motion. “Once it’s going, it’s going,” Raouafi said. (The probe strategically passes by Venus for “gravity assists” that propel it closer to the sun; these Venusian flybys minimally slow the craft, but ultimately result in it picking up even more speed as it zips nearer to the massive star.)

At such a torrid pace, the craft begins a new orbit every three months, allowing its instruments to collect a wealth of information about the solar environment. “Every three months we have a new load of new data,” marveled Raouafi. “It will take years and years to study.”

How the probe will unravel solar mysteries

Space weather researchers have some weighty questions. They want to know why the solar wind accelerates after it leaves the sun, reaching up to 2 million mph. They want to grasp why the corona (which reaches 2 million degrees Fahrenheit) is so much hotter than the sun’s surface (it’s 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit). And they want to understand how extreme space weather, caused by different types of solar explosions, can behave and ultimately impact Earth.

A particularly threatening solar eruption is called a coronal mass ejection, or CME. These occur when the sun ejects a mass of super hot gas (plasma). “It’s like scooping up a piece of the sun and ejecting it into space,” NOAA space weather scientist Mark Miesch told Mashable earlier this year.

These events can wreak havoc on our power grids and communication networks. Infamously, a potent CME in 1989 knocked out power to millions in Québec, Canada. The CME hit Earth’s magnetic field on March 12 of that year, and then, wrote NASA astronomer Sten Odenwald, “Just after 2:44 a.m. on March 13, the currents found a weakness in the electrical power grid of Quebec. In less than two minutes, the entire Quebec power grid lost power. During the 12-hour blackout that followed, millions of people suddenly found themselves in dark office buildings and underground pedestrian tunnels, and in stalled elevators.”

The Parker solar probe’s researchers expect the spacecraft, fitted with instruments to measure and image the solar wind, will enable us to better forecast when and where a potent CME may hit. For example, when a CME erupts from the sun’s surface, it must travel over 92 million miles to reach Earth, but along the way this hot gas will “pile up” the solar wind ahead of it. “That will affect its arrival time to Earth,” Raouafi said. Knowledge about these space dynamics is critical: A good space weather forecast would allow power utilities to temporarily shut off power to avoid conducting a power surge from a CME, and potentially blowing out power to millions.

On the outskirts of the corona, the spacecraft is relentlessly exposed to brutal heat and radiation, and in September 2022 it flew through “one of the most powerful coronal mass ejections (CMEs) ever recorded,” NASA said. Yet the craft remains in great shape. That’s largely thanks to a 4.5-inch-thick carbon heat shield that’s pointed at the sun. The shield itself heats up to some 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, but just a couple of feet behind the shield, the environs are surprisingly pleasant.

“Most of the instruments are working at room temperatures,” Raouafi said.

Mill composter review: The easiest indoor composter, especially if you don’t have a garden

How do you start composting at home? The trashcan-sized Mill bin answers that question, and is also a solution for what to do with the compost afterward.

At-home composting has made serious moves in the past few years.

The most revolutionary was the move indoors. Electric countertop composters like the Vitamix FoodCycler and our beloved Lomi consolidated the composting process (which previously required outdoor space, several months of manual stirring, probably worms, and likely too much patience) to an appliance that doesn’t hog much more counter space than an Instant Pot. Instead of sitting idly and waiting to be emptied like the humble stainless steel countertop food scrap bin, they recycle the food scraps to a dirt-like material in a matter of hours.

Despite these advances in accessibility and simplicity — two major factors necessary to make the average person consider separating food scraps in their kitchen — this approach to countertop composting poses a recurring pickle: what to do with that compost once it’s made. Mill fills the gap.

How does Mill work?

Mill is a large electric indoor composter that sits on the floor like a trash can instead of on the counter. Like other in-home composters, it’s a less-smelly place than the trash to throw plate scrapings, forgotten fridge leftovers, old pet food, and the butt of the bread that everyone keeps bypassing. From there, it breaks down those scraps into a fertilizer that’s kind of like dirt, and it only takes a few hours.

But with those basics covered, Mill really starts to pull away from the competition. The most obvious physical difference is that Mill sits on the floor rather than the countertop and is basically like having another full-sized trash can in your kitchen. I love that opening the lid doesn’t require a hand to unscrew — the presser foot opens it for you.

Instead of waiting on you to press a button when the bucket is full like its countertop competitors, Mill automatically starts grinding, churning, and dehydrating whatever you tossed in it that day. You can customize the starting time in the app, and I chose 10 p.m. to try to ensure that everyone in my household was done eating and snacking for the night. The sound of the lid locking was a bit of a jump scare the first few times, but then I literally just started using it to tell time. Oh, Mill just locked? Maybe don’t start a movie right now.

Of course, there have been several instances where somebody has something to put in the Mill after it locks. Conveniently, a recent software update allows you to pause the cycle to unlock the lid by holding the button down. Mill automatically resumes afterward.

I actually don’t know exactly how long Mill runs overnight but it’s always done by the time I’m up for work the next morning. It’s also so much quieter than I expected (given the Lomi’s haunted house-esque creaking), producing a low whir that I only really notice when I’m standing near it.

Mill takes almost any food scrap, but not paper or compostable packaging

Mill is super versatile in the variety of food you can put in it. The “yes” list is pretty self-explanatory and easy to remember, but you can get a quick refresher by glancing at the magnet that Mill sends with your bin. Being forced to glance at the magnet every time we open the fridge really helps to normalize separating food scraps in my apartment’s kitchen routine — scraping our plates into Mill is a reflex, just like the automatic reflex to throw a metal can into the recycling bin instead of the trash.

The fact that Mill’s list of what can be composted is heavier on the “yes” side than the “no” side also makes it easier to remember to compost in the first place, especially for the people in the household who aren’t the hardcore eco-friendly ones.

I remember my days of saving food scraps in a bag in my freezer to drop off at my local food scrap collection location in Brooklyn. Having to follow so many rules and Google what was acceptable on such a regular basis was a pain in the ass. “No meat, no dairy or cheese, no fats or oils, no cooked foods.” OK, so do you have to completely trash a salad if it has a few drops of dressing on it? Are steamed vegetables fine or not? Are you not even going to mention grains? Also, nobody knows what the hell carbon-rich or nitrogen-rich materials are. Explain it to me like I’m 5.

Most any food things can be thrown into Mill, and most of the “no” section is composed of non-food items that seem pretty obvious, anyway. The one huge difference is that, while composters like Lomi and compost piles being used for fertilizer can use plant clippings and and paper products like tea bags or napkins, Mill bars these items. It was a bummer at first after the Lomi made me feel like I was sending so much less paper trash to the landfill, but it makes sense when you consider that Mill grounds are being fed to chickens. Remembering that also makes adding meat (like chicken!!!) to Mill feel… morbid, but technically, it’s allowed. Good thing no one in my apartment eats meat anyway.

If there’s further confusion about whether something specific can or can’t go in, it’s almost guaranteed to be listed in the Mill app, where you can type in the most random of food items and get a solid yes or no answer. I did this for the less obvious ones, like pet food (if you think wet cat food smells bad in the can, just wait until it’s been chilling in the trash for two days) and mixed-ingredient leftovers like pasta with cheese and sauce.

Mill proves how much it really is consolidating your footprint by how long it takes for the bin to fill up. It was a bottomless pit for the first three months I was using it, holding weeks’ worth of daily food scrap dumping from three people and requiring literally no effort on my end. Once the grounds weighed 9 pounds and hit the green line inside, the app let me know it was time to empty.

From there, your only job is to pack your milled results into one of the pre-labeled packages that should have arrived in a separate delivery from the giant Mill box itself. These ship flat, so you’ll have to unfold one and place a planted-based plastic liner in it (also free with your membership). The shipping box can technically hold two full batches and the grounds don’t smell bad at all, so if you have a place to store the half-full box until your bin fills again, you’ll have to mail less often.

After scheduling a USPS pickup or dropping the package off at the post office, your compost is Mill’s problem — and Mill ensures that your food scraps are actually being recycled.

The way that Mill composts on demand on a daily basis is so cool and so different. But that’s hardly Mill’s sole unprecedented flex. Arguably even more impressive is the fact that Mill is so dedicated to recycling food that it puts your compost directly back into the life cycle — into the belly of a chicken, actually.

The beef that any average Earth enjoyer has with the beef industry is spotlighted by countless documentaries and Impossible Whopper commercials. While cow farming is by far the biggest agricultural hazard for the climate, they’re not the only livestock practice with a hefty carbon footprint. A study about chicken and salmon farming published by Current Biology in February 2023 asserts that much of the emission — as much as 55 percent — associated with poultry farming comes from feeding them.

Factory-farmed chicken feed largely comes from grain and soya. Growing either requires mass amounts of land (often gained through deforestation) and water. The boom of demand for soybean products (ironically, the main base ingredient in a lot of plant-based meat) from humans and now chickens, apparently, is an increasing area of concern on top of the demand for the meat itself.

So, by rerouting your Mill grounds into the hands of farmers as an ingredient for their chicken feed, Mill’s closed-loop service can be thought of as an added measure of sustainability on top of the food scraps it diverts from landfills. According to an interview with NBC, the partnership with farmers also helps to subsidize the membership.

Mill’s mail-in collection and repurposing of the compost you make is the “No garden, no problem,” take that I could imagine a ton of apartment-dwelling Earth stans have been waiting for. Creating nutrient-rich fertilizer at home isn’t exactly a solution if you’re not maintaining any vegetation at home. That was one of my biggest gripes with the Lomi — plus the fact that the setting that works with paper products won’t produce fertilizer that should go into soil at all. Instead, they suggest putting that finished compost in the green bin. You mean, the green bin and curbside composting system that a ton of towns don’t have? Suggesting taking them to a local compost drop-off location kind of defeats the purpose of having a machine to do the composting at home.

How much does Mill cost?

Mill’s pricing diverges from the one-time, upfront payment situation that you’d expect. The bin itself is free, but it won’t ship without your subscription to an annual or monthly Mill service plan. The service plan covers pickups of those pre-labeled food ground packages whenever you want, connection to a support team of real people, plus maintenance like filters, repairs, and even bin replacement.

Here’s how the costs shake out: The cheaper of the two is the annual plan, which will run you $33 per month (billed upfront at $396 annually with free bin delivery) or the monthly plan, which is $45 month to month ($540 for a year) plus a $75 bin delivery. If you go with the annual plan, composting with Mill costs about dollar a day.

Taking all that Mill’s service does while it’s in your kitchen and beyond into account — plus the fact that it’s the only consumer composter on the market that’s doing this — a dollar a day could be totally digestible for anyone with a somewhat disposable budget. If you don’t already pay for trash as part of your current utility bill (like I luckily don’t), you could also think of Mill as claiming that chunk that many others already have to budget for.

No, the loophole you’re thinking of won’t work, either. You can’t simply stop paying for the service while keeping the bin for free. Membership cancellation is only effective once Mill has received your returned bin, which you’ll have 30 days to send back after requesting to cancel your membership.

Mill versus Lomi and Vitamix: Cost is (almost) its only downside

Having Mill in my kitchen has been such a positive, hands-off experience that it hasn’t really sparked any noteworthy complaints. I’d be willing to bet that that’s what everyone will say — until the one-year mark rolls around and several hundred dollars disappear from your bank account again. The whole “dollar a day thing” adds up quickly, especially when you consider that a single year of using Mill is basically as expensive as the full one-time purchase of an indoor countertop composter.

So if you’re interested in composting inside your home but aren’t yet set on the specific machine, your main options aside from Mill are countertop composters like the Lomi, Reencle, or Vitamix FoodCycler. They operate similarly in that they still do the composting inside your home within a matter of hours — they just sit on your countertop and hold a much smaller capacity. These three go for around $400 to $600 at full price, maybe dropping by $100 or so when on sale. Though one of those models might be more expensive than Mill initially, you only have to pay that once.

This isn’t to say that I don’t understand why Mill costs more. It’s providing a wickedly convenient recurring service that no competitors can provide, and you’re paying for the experts to deal with your compost rather than having to figure out what to do with it. I get it, but I’d be remiss not to put it into perspective, especially with steady inflation making us more closely considering what’s a necessity and what’s not.

Mill also sits on the floor while these competitors sit on the counter, and which would work better for you probably depends on the layout of your kitchen and whether you can give up counter space or floor space.

Unlike Lomi, Mill can’t take paper products or plant remnants, such as yard waste or fallen houseplant leaves. You wouldn’t find that appetizing and neither do chickens. However, these slightly stricter guidelines certainly aren’t enough of a drawback to upstage the rest of Mill’s versatility. This is still more range than that of an outdoor composting pile, and landfills have bigger problems than paper and plants, anyway.

In my experience with having both Mill and Lomi in my apartment for several months, Lomi had several maintenance blips that required part replacement. Mill hasn’t glitched once. My guess is a lot of people would be willing to pay more for less upkeep and fewer chats with customer service agents.

Mill versus saving scraps for local pickup or drop-off

FWIW, a ton of people already pay for compost pickup. For instance, one service near me in Philadelphia charges $12 per month for every-other-week pickup, or $18 per month for weekly pickup. Mill’s service cost obviously still surpasses that by a bit, but paying to compost isn’t totally unheard of.

Then, there are the households that definitely want to divert their food scraps from the landfill but can’t decide whether it’s worthwhile to pay for their own composter or just take their scraps to a community compost site.

I just felt a shiver down my spine. Oh, no, I’m not cold — I’m just reflecting on my time saving my food scraps in my last two apartments. The smell that punched me in the face every time I took the lid off of the stainless steel countertop bin or the mystery drop of melty rotten freezer scrap juice that just fell on my foot. Four years of dedication to being a compost girlie means four years of experimenting with different methods of saving food scraps to take somewhere. After all of that, I can confidently confirm that being able to do the whole process in my home has been the easiest, the least gross, and so, so worth it.

Putting a number on Mill’s environmental benefits

I know, know — in a perfect world, a sleek, advanced compost system like Mill would be as standard and accessible in a home as curbside garbage collection is. It seems like we may actually be on the path to that (if you think that’s delusional, let me be delusional). States like California and Vermont haven’t yet awarded each resident and business with a Mill, but they do have statewide mandatory compost laws in place. Cities like San Fransisco and Portland are doing the same with citywide rules, and Brooklyn residents have access to citywide curbside composting as of October 2023. That’s supposed to expand to all of New York City by the end of 2024.

But until then, composting at home with something like Mill is still so impactful, even if you’re the only person you know who has one.

In case you’re blissfully unaware of just how detrimental our food waste habit really is, let’s get into it quickly. It’s estimated that the average American household wastes almost a third of the food it acquires each year, and that’s obviously not counting the contributions of food waste from businesses like restaurants.

When food rots, it produces methane: a gas that’s 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period after reaching the atmosphere. The combination of households, restaurants, and more creates 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions — equivalent to the exhaust 37 million cars would create.

This is a statistic that Mill is aiming to shrink. Is the Mill composter worth it?

Considering I spent my own money to purchase the free test unit I was sent to keep using Mill after I was done testing it, yes, I’d say Mill is worth it. It’s truly in a league of its own in the way that it’s currently the only at-home composter on the market that asks for your compost back to repurpose it. And though that aspect of it may sound a little fancy or obscure, Mill is ridiculously straightforward and easy to use. It’s literally like an extra 13-gallon trash can in your kitchen that takes itself out. Need I circle back to how much less rancid it is to discard food?

Mill simultaneously stirs hope and frustration because it shows just how easy composting at home could and should be. Like seriously, imagine if having a sustainable waste system like this at home was as normalized and accessible as sending everything to the landfill is. To me, it posed the daydream situation of how quickly America could turn its food waste shit show around if composting was funded on the micro level, rather than shifting the responsibility to the average person and whether or not they can figure out a convenient composting solution on their own dime.
