Stephen King tweets his ‘Salem’s Lot’ remake review

Posted on:

Stephen King has shared his review of Gary Dauberman’s “Salem’s Lot” remake in a series of posts on Twitter/X.
A man with glasses looks serious while talking. Part of a Twitter/X post from Stephen King is visible at the bottom of the image.

Will we ever actually get to see IT writer Gary Dauberman’s remake of Stephen King’s novel ‘Salem’s Lot?

The project has been sitting on the Warner Bros. shelves for a while, but based on King’s recent review, we’re hoping it sees the light of day soon.

The horror master — who isn’t always favourable when he reviews adaptations of his work — took to Twitter/X recently to praise the remake, describing it as “muscular and involving”.

“It has the feel of ‘Old Hollywood,’ when a film was given a chance to draw a breath before getting to business. When attention spans were longer, in other words,” wrote King. “It feels like a horror movie version of slow-burn movies like THE GREAT ESCAPE. It builds very well. There are diversions from the book I don’t agree with, but on the whole, faithful.”

King even went on to describe his favourite scene from the movie, which sounds fittingly gruesome for a story about vampires.

“Best scene: Danny Glick in the hospital, trying to claw down a blood bag,” wrote King. “The Glick scene could have been directed by John Carpenter in his prime.”

Although Salem’s Lot may not be getting a theatrical release, the latest reports suggest it may end up launching on Max. Here’s hoping it’s soon.

UPDATE: Nov. 3, 2023, 3:00 a.m. EDT This post has been updated with the best early Black Friday robot vacuum deals including self-emptying robot vacuums, hybrid robot vacuums, and cheap standalone robot vacuums from iRobot, Shark, Roborock, and more.

An overview of the best early Black Friday robot vacuum deals:

Robot vacuums feel like they’re everywhere and nowhere all at once in the good year of 2023. Shopping holidays have gone hard in this category for years, but you still may not know anyone who actually has one. If you’re wondering if robot vacuums are actually worth it, your best bet is to scope out Black Friday robot vacuum deals to try one yourself, already.

By Black Friday, we mean the entire month of November. Retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy have all already cut the virtual ribbon on their Black Friday sales, so unless you’re waiting for a very specific premium robot vacuum deal (like the Roomba Combo j9+‘s first discount, if that even happens), there’s no real point in waiting until Black Friday — and denying yourself several weeks of one less chore — to buy a robot vacuum.

Below, we’re tracking the robot vacuum deals live ahead of Black Friday. Early deals are organized into three sections — standalone robot vacuums, self-emptying robot vacuums (that don’t mop), and robot vacuum/mop hybrids — and listed in order of price. We’ll update this list with more models as they go on sale ahead of Black Friday.

Early Black Friday standalone robot vacuum deals under $300

Why we like it

The limbo period between Amazon’s second Prime Day of the year and Black Friday is Shark’s time to shine, apparently. For a solid cheap Shark option, skip the outdated $129 Shark ION and opt for one from the newer Matrix line instead. For less than $200, the RV2300 model (without an auto-empty dock) secures LiDAR-powered smart home mapping and virtual boundaries, plus Shark’s Matrix technology, which tackles debris from multiple angles in a crosshatch pattern to grab anything that was missed on the first pass.

Shark itself claims that the Matrix dishes out 50% more suction power than the Roomba i3 — and when the Roomba i3 costs $100 more even on sale, we’d understand if that’s an experiment you’re willing to test.

Why we like it

Shark released several iterations of its flagship robot vacuum in 2023. This chic black and silver RV2310AE model is on sale at Amazon for less than $300 — a 40% price cut and a record-low price (according to camelcamelcamel) by far. Home mapping and virtual boundaries guided by 360-degree LiDAR are present here, plus Shark’s newest claim to fame: its Matrix cleaning technique that vacuums in a crosshatch pattern to grab any debris missed from the first angle.

Early Black Friday self-emptying robot vacuum deals under $700

Our pick: iRobot Roomba s9+

$599.99 at iRobot (save $400)

Why we like it

The s9+ hasn’t been the latest or greatest Roomba since iRobot started rolling out its j Series robot vacs in 2021. But it should still be a serious contender if you have pets or lots of thick carpeting in your home — especially when on sale for $599.99, which is just $100 away from the $499.99 it hit during Prime Big Deal Days. For reference, the only Roombas with stronger suction power than the s9+ are the j9+ and Combo j9+, which go for $899.99 and $1,399.99, respectively.

More self-emptying robot vacuums on sale for under $700

Early Black Friday robot vacuum/mop hybrid deals

Why we like it

iRobot has also started pushing out Black Friday deals, but more quietly than the big retailers. One discount flying under the radar that needs to be called out is on the Roomba Combo j5+, which is one of five new Roombas just launched in September. At nearly 40% off, the Roomba Combo j5+ is sitting at $499.99 — the same sale price that the less-fancy Roomba Combo i5+ is currently seeing.

Both models mop and require you to be home to manually click the water tank on, and both can map your home and avoid (or tackle) carpeted rooms on command. But there’s one huge difference between the Combo i5 and Combo j5: The j5 Series are the cheapest Roombas that use iRobot’s obstacle avoidance tech to avoid eating phone chargers or smearing pet waste if the vacuum finds an accident before you do. This capability, which we first experienced when testing the Combo j7+, is an absolute game changer if your previous gripe with robot vacuums was that you had to clean up before sending them out to clean.

Missing ‘Dune: Part Two’? Check out these three ‘Dune’-related books.

Posted on:

“Dune: Part Two” may be delayed, but these three books make for the perfect antidote.
Three books against a backdrop of sand dunes.

There is an alternate universe where, come Nov. 3, we’d all be seated for Dune: Part Two‘s theatrical run. But Dune: Part Two‘s release has been pushed back to March 15, 2024.

Luckily, there are still several ways to get into the Arrakis spirit while we wait for March. This fall saw the release of three non-fiction books that delve deep into the world and cultural impact of Frank Herbert’s classic science-fiction tome. From examining the places and people Herbert drew inspiration from to a juicy, behind-the-scenes look at David Lynch’s maligned adaptation and more, these books offer something for Dune novices and experts alike.

Here are three books to read if you’re looking for some extra Dune goodness.

The Spice Must Flow: The Story of Dune, from Cult Novels to Visionary Sci-Fi Movies by Ryan Britt

For a comprehensive look at all things Dune, look no further than The Spice Must Flow. Ryan Britt charts the entire history of the franchise, beginning with Frank Herbert’s scrapped article about sand dunes and ending with Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film adaptation. In between, you’ll learn about the writing and publishing process behind each Dune novel, as well as the many proposed Dune films that never saw the light of day.

Perhaps most fascinating here is how Britt lays out just how influential Dune is to sci-fi as a whole. Yes, it’s one of the seminal works of the genre, but several Dune-related connections also led to some of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. How did an unmade Dune movie influence Ridley Scott’s Alien? Or Scott’s involvement in Blade Runner, for that matter? And what did Herbert really think about Star Wars, with it many overt similarities to Dune?

Due to the broad scope of The Spice Must Flow, there’s a lot of fictional and real-world ground to cover. That’s entire decades, not to mention thousands of years’ worth of Dune lore! Still, Britt’s guidance through Dune‘s impact on culture proves assured, especially when coupled with interviews with sci-fi historians, actors and directors, as well as members of Herbert’s own family. The Spice Must Flow takes a daunting wealth of subject matter and makes it an accessible, illuminating read that never lets you get lost in the sands.

A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune — An Oral History by Max Evry

Decades before Denis Villeneuve put his spin on Dune, director David Lynch spearheaded the first onscreen adaptation of Herbert’s work. The result, released in 1984, was a critical and commercial flop. Chiefest among its problems was how the film struggled to fit all of Dune into its two-hour runtime, leading to a nearly incoherent narrative.

Yet Lynch’s Dune is not without its bright spots, boasting stunning production design and truly fun (if occasionally broad) performances from stars like Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, Sean Young, and Sting. Here is a science-fiction film that isn’t afraid to lean into the bizarre, the outlandish, and the ornate — a deep contrast from Villeneuve’s more austere, brutalist interpretation of Herbert’s work. So, how did this wonderfully strange film come to be? And how did it become doomed to fail?

With his book A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune — An Oral History, Max Evry dives deep into every facet of Dune‘s production, assembling interviews with actors like MacLachlan and Young, crew members like casting director Jane Jenkins and costume designer Bob Ringwood, and even Lynch himself. You’ll learn about everything from the challenges the crew faced shooting in Mexico to possible money laundering going on behind the scenes. Movie magic!

Clocking in at over 500 pages long, A Masterpiece in Disarray is a dream come true for anyone who loves or is fascinated by the “black sheep of David Lynch’s filmography,” as Evry calls Dune. The oral history sections are the clear standouts, lending new context and character to some of the film’s strangest bits (like Kenneth McMillan’s Baron Harkonnen). Woven through the entire book is a sense of wonder that this beast of a film got made in the first place, even if it ultimately wasn’t the film Lynch wanted to make. If you’re hungry for a deep dive on the oldest Dune adaptation or just want to take a closer look at this strange stumble in Lynch’s career, A Masterpiece in Disarray is the book for you.

The Worlds of Dune: The Places and Cultures that Inspired Frank Herbert by Tom Huddleston

Wonder where Frank Herbert got the ideas for the Bene Gesserit, the Voice, and those sweet, sweet sandworms? The Worlds of Dune by Tom Huddleston seeks to answer all your world-building questions and then some.

Huddleston kicks off our Dune tour on Arrakis before going planet by planet to Caladan, Giedi Prime, and Kaitan. At each stop, he outlines key cultural and geographical aspects of the planet, as well as the real-world inspirations behind them. Some of the inspirations are more obvious, such as Herbert’s use of Arabic words and Islamic theology. Others, like a focus on the field of semantics or anti-Soviet sentiments, are less so, making for some fascinating connections between our world and that of Paul Atreides.

Aside from being well-researched and beautifully printed, complete with illustrations from early editions of Dune and images from the films, The Worlds of Dune is careful to examine Herbert’s legacy. Huddleston pushes back on some of Herbert’s more troubling areas of inspiration, such as the eugenics-based Bene Gesserit breeding program. He also questions whether Herbert’s drawing inspiration from non-white cultures like the San people of the Kalahari Desert or the Quileute tribe of the Pacific Northwest was appropriative, appreciative, or (most likely) a mix of both. Informative and thought-provoking in equal measure, The World of Dune is perfect for people who want a closer look at Dune through religious, historical, and geo-political lenses.

We’re not going to lie, this $249 price tag is far from a Black Friday exclusive. This tablet has hit this all-time low price a few times this year, including during last month’s Prime Day sale, but it’s also sat at higher price points of $279 and up. We wouldn’t recommend this tablet if you need anything more heavy-duty, but for a basic tablet that gets the job done, you’ll be saving at least $150 more than if you went for any other iPad. The iPhone 15 may be the shiniest new Apple toy, and while the deals on the phone certainly aren’t bad, they are contingent upon you having a decent trade-in. The Apple Watch SE is an affordable option if you’re in the market for a smartwatch, but don’t need many fitness features. Usually, its price will dip down by $30 every now and then, which makes for a pretty decent deal, but Black Friday season has brought us something even better, with this 44mm SE that’s down almost $45. That’s roughly $5 away from its lowest price ever (that we’ve only seen it hit once). Apple’s M3 Max MacBook Pro is as fast as expensive M2 Ultra Mac desktops

Posted on:

The M3 Max is faster than its most powerful predecessor, and it’s inside the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.
Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max

We suspected the M3 Max inside the new MacBook Pro models was fast — but maybe not quite this fast.

Apple unveiled its new silicon chipset, M3, earlier this week with its new line of MacBook Pros. Every year, the company zeroes in on its new chips’ zippier performance compared to previous generations. However, early third-party tests discovered that the company really seems to have delivered this time.

Credit: Apple

A database entry for Geekbench, a test that inspects CPU performance, clocked that the 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Pro delivers a multi-core score of 21,084.

This test result was first noticed by MacRumors, which pointed out that this figure puts the new M3 Max within the same performance tier as the M2 Ultra, which can be found inside powerful Apple desktops such as the Mac Pro and Mac Studio. The average multi-core score for those models are 21,182 and 21,316 respectively.

The M3 Max MacBook Pro with a 16-core CPU has a starting price of $3,999, so it’s certainly not cheap. However, the Mac Pro M2 Ultra starts at $6,999, so the fact that it’s delivering similar CPU performance scores is impressive.

While the Mac Studio M2 Ultra starts at the same price as the MacBook Pro M3 Max (16-core CPU), the Mac Studio comes with a 24-core CPU in comparison, with very little difference in performance.

When compared to the M2 Max, the M3 Max is around 45 percent faster than its predecessor, according to tests. That’s right around the 50 percent number that Apple claimed during the “Scary Fast” Mac event.

The M3 Max chip is certainly impressive from what we can see so far. But will the performance hold up to the everyday usage of pro-level consumers that make up its targeted audience? We’ll soon find out.

Apple’s new M3 line of MacBook Pros launch on Nov. 7.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 to begin production in early 2024

Posted on:

“The Last of Us” Season 2 is tentatively set to begin shooting in early 2024, but only if the striking SAG-AFTRA reaches a fair deal.

Desperate to reunite with Joel (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey), and an army of creepy Clickers in The Last of Us Season 2? Then we’ve got some good news for you.

The new season is set to begin production in early 2024, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys told press at a Nov. 2 event. That timeline is tentative for now, as production can only begin once the striking Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) reaches a fair deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

Outside of shooting, The Last of Us Season 2 has made progress in other ways. Showrunner Craig Mazin told Entertainment Weekly that before the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike, the writers had mapped out Season 2 and Mazin had written the first episode.

Given a 2024 production start date, it’s likely The Last of Us Season 2 will be airing in 2025. According to Bloys, The White Lotus Season 3 has also been pushed back to 2025.

However, there is still a lot of HBO programming to look forward to coming into 2024. House of the Dragon will be airing in the early summer. Returning shows include True Detective: Night Country, Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12, The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3, Hacks Season 3, and Industry Season 3.

Everything we know about ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2

Posted on:

It’s official: “House of the Dragon” Season 2 will premiere in summer 2024 — and we know what will happen next.
A pregnant woman with silver blonde hair holds the cheeks of a young man with short brown hair. Both wear red and black.

The Season 1 finale of House of the Dragon ended with a devastating, dragon-toothed crunch that shook the realm and set in motion the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. But with that epic cliffhanger comes the horrifying realization that we have to wait for Season 2 to find out what will happen next.

The hiatus may be dark and full of terrors, but we now know when we can expect our next dose of House of the Dragon. Plus, based on the show’s source material, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, we have a few predictions as to the chaos coming our way. Here’s what we know so far about Season 2.

What is the release date for House of the Dragon Season 2?

House of the Dragon Season 2 will be taking flight in early summer of 2024, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys confirmed in a press event on Nov. 2, 2023. The season will be made up of eight episodes instead of the first season’s 10.

Here’s what happens next in Fire & Blood.

If you absolutely need to know what happens after Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) dons her war face at the end of Season 1, you’ve come to the right place. House of the Dragon has been mostly faithful to its source material so far, so I’m fairly confident that it will continue to adhere to the book in the aftermath of the death of Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). I’ll be going full spoilers here, so if you don’t want to know the future of the Dance of the Dragons, turn away now.

Rhaenyra and Daemon (Matt Smith) will retaliate against Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and her family in a big way. The Blacks will attempt to shore up their forces by finding riders for riderless dragons like Vermithor and Seasmoke. Meanwhile, Daemon will attack Harrenhal on dragonback and win it without bloodshed, striking a major blow to the Greens. In Fire & Blood, this attack happens while Jacaerys (Harry Collett) and Lucerys are on their missions. Now, with the tragedy of Luc’s death fueling Daemon, it’s highly likely the show’s version of the attack at Harrenhal will be on the more violent side.

And the violence will only continue! Because Daemon’s next move in the book is among the most horrifying events in Westerosi history. (If you’re having any doubts about spoilers, now’s definitely the time to turn back.) Using his connections to the underbelly of King’s Landing, Daemon enlists the help of two unsavory characters known only as Blood and Cheese. They attack the Red Keep and force Queen Helaena (Phia Saban) to choose which of her sons they will kill. They then proceed to murder the son she doesn’t name. The attack is Daemon’s doing in Fire & Blood, but given the rage in Rhaenyra’s eyes at the end of the finale, is there a chance she’ll get involved as well?

As chaos rages down south, Jace will travel north to the Eyrie and beyond, to Winterfell. On his trip north, he’ll secure allies from Houses like the Arryns and the Manderlys. He will also befriend Lord Cregan Stark and win him to Rhaenyra’s cause. So you can expect a mixed bag of sorts from the start of House of the Dragon Season 2. On the one hand, we get the Starks back. On the other, we get more traumatic child murder.

Brace yourselves, fellow viewers: Our wait may be long, but the coming Dance will be one heck of a jig.

Season 1 of House of the Dragon is now streaming on Max.

UPDATE: Nov. 2, 2023, 12:29 p.m. EDT This article has been updated to reflect “House of the Dragon”s summer 2024 release date.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 will premiere summer 2024, HBO confirms

Posted on:

The highly anticipated second season of “House of the Dragon” is set to premiere early summer 2024, according to HBO CEO Casey Bloys.
A blonde woman in a black cloak and gold crown.

Hoist your banners and saddle up your dragons: Season 2 of HBO’s House of the Dragon is less than a year away.

The new season is set to premiere in early summer of 2024, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys revealed at a press event on Nov. 2. It will continue to adapt George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a “historical” account of the Targaryen civil war. Season 2 is currently in post-production, and will be made up of eight episodes as opposed to the first season’s 10.

The House of the Dragon news comes as part of a larger announcement about HBO and Max’s upcoming television programming. 2024 will see the release of new seasons of HBO and Max staples like True Detective: Night Country, Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12, The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3, Hacks Season 3, and Industry Season 3. True crime phenomenon The Jinx will also be getting a second part, focused on the aftermath of Robert Durst’s conviction.

Tentpole shows based on Warner Bros. IP like The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy are slated for later 2024 release dates. New original shows and miniseries like The Regime (starring Kate Winslet), Park Chan-wook’s The Sympathizer, and superhero spoof The Franchise are also on the docket.

Bloys revealed that other popular HBO series like The Last of Us and The White Lotus are eyeing releases in 2025. The Westeros-set A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, is tentatively set to begin production in spring of 2024. The same goes for The Last of Us Season 2, although the start of production depends on whether the striking Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) reaches a fair deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

For reference, the only Roombas with stronger suction power than the s9+ are the j9+ and Combo j9+, which go for $899.99 and $1,399.99, respectively.

  • 40 times the suction power of 600 Series Roombas (the j7+ offers 10 times the suction)

  • 120-minute battery life

  • Self-emptying dock holds at least two months’ worth of debris

Why we like it

One of Roborock’s 2022 vacuum releases — and potentially the best value of that bunch — is just shy of 50% off. Of the Q Series, the mid-range Q7+ is the cheapest robovac that self-empties and mops. It vacuums with more-than-decent suction and simultaneously mops, lifting the pad when carpet is detected.

  • No-go and no-mop zones can be designated in the app

  • 180-minute battery life

  • Self-emptying dock holds at least seven weeks’ worth of debris
