Apple Watch almost got Android support — here’s why Apple changed its mind

Posted on:

Apple apparently came really close to making Apple Watches compatible with Android devices.

Apple Watch and Android: a match (almost) made in Heaven.

In a wide-ranging Bloomberg report about Apple’s health tracking ambitions, one little juicy nugget of info stands out in particular: Apple almost made its signature house brand smartwatches compatible with Android devices.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s engineers were “deeply engaged” in bringing both Apple Watch and Health app compatibility to Android as part of something called “Project Fennel.”

Of course, the operative word here is “almost.” This obviously didn’t – and most likely won’t – happen. The reason for that is simple: Apple wants to keep selling iPhones, and Apple Watches help the company do that. One of Bloomberg’s sources straight up said giving Android users access to Apple Watch would “dilute the value of the watch to the iPhone.”

This is fascinating just on the surface, but it’s also worth looking at it in context of what Apple’s competition is in the Android smartwatch market. Competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and Google’s Pixel Watch have certainly improved over the years, but Apple’s product is still widely regarded as the one to get, especially for health tracking.

Pushing Apple Watch to Android users may have diluted iPhone sales, but it probably would’ve put a dent in Samsung and Google sales, too. Regardless, this is all speculation at this point. All we can do is think about what could have been.

Pixel 8 reported issues are piling up: 3 common issues we’re hearing

Posted on:

Pixel 8 owners are reporting a number of concerning issues with Google’s latest flagship Android smartphone.
Google Pixel 8

Overheating, battery issues, connectivity problems –– no, we’re not talking about the new iPhone 15 here.

These are the most common issues now being reported by Pixel 8 owners.

The freshly introduced Pixel 8 series was revealed on October 4 and made its way to store shelves on October 12. As a result, users have had several weeks to put the Pixel 8 through its paces with their everyday smartphone activities.

Unfortunately, Pixel 8 users are finding that, much like Apple’s latest device, some vital issues need to be addressed.

Overheating phones

Pixel 8 owners have reportedly been experiencing one of the iPhone 15’s biggest problems at launch: an overheating phone. Users, like these examples from the XDA forums, have shared that the Pixel 8 gets hot to the touch while charging the device, streaming videos, or even normal web browsing.

However, the extent of the problem’s prevalence remains unclear.

Still, it’s worth noting that some Pixel 8 users have shared that the new phone does feel cooler than previous iterations of the device, like the Pixel 7. In fact, those older models have had their fair share of overheating complaints over the years, too, which were supposedly addressed with the launch of Android 14.

Poor battery life

Battery life is always a major concern for any smartphone user. However, the complaints here seem to fall more in line with serious battery-drain issue.

For example, one user on Google’s official support forums claims that their one-week-old Pixel 8 fell to 20 percent battery life after less than three hours of screen time. An Android Police writer also shared that they experienced battery and overheating issues with their Pixel 8 device.

Again, it’s unclear exactly how many Pixel 8 owners are experiencing these issues. But, it does seem to be a problem with at least some devices.

A user on Reddit theorized that the battery-drain issues may be directly tied to another one of Pixel 8’s issues: poor cellular connectivity.

Connectivity issues

Another issue that some Pixel 8 owners are reporting has to do with cellular connectivity. Users have shared that they’ve had poor connection to their 5G service, sometimes getting dropped from the connection altogether. Typically, these reports indicate that the Pixel 8 does not encounter the same issues when it’s positioned within Wi-Fi range.

As Android Police points out, previous Pixel models were also notorious for its connectivity issues with users reporting spotty reception, laggy web browsing, and dropped calls.

In the previously mentioned Reddit post, some users have tied the battery-drain problem to the connectivity issue as the Pixel 8 battery does not appear to abnormally lose its charge while utilizing a Wi-Fi service like it does over 5G.

Based on what we know (and based on the most recent examples with the iPhone 15), buggy software may be the culprit – not hardware. As Mashable reported recently, the latest Android 14 update appeared to cause a number of problems on older Pixel devices. It’s possible that Google will roll out a firmware update that will address the majority of these issues for most users, whether they own a Pixel 8 or one of the previous generations.

The general consensus from experts is that the Pixel 8 is an improvement from the Pixel 6 and 7 on all these issues. These foibles seem to have been prevalent among older Pixel devices, and while some Pixel users are reporting gen-over-gen improvements, Google still hasn’t fully rectified the issue yet.

AdultFriendFinder review 2023: Best hookup site for sex (UK)

Posted on:

AdultFriendFinder is a borderline-porn hookup site that’s stuck in the past. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Phone in hand

This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience.

Moving to a new area or working at a new job where you don’t know anybody can be seriously depressing, especially if you’re already introverted as it is. What are you supposed to do? Go sit at the bar by yourself? And talk to strangers? No thanks.

Then comes the lightbulb idea: You can make friends online. If online dating is so popular and successful, there’s no way that there aren’t a few legit sites where you can make adult friends in your area with similar interests. After a quick search, AdultFriendFinder sounds like a good place to start.

So you’re on your lunch break at work, type in the URL, and the next thing you know, you’re frantically closing the tab and hoping nobody walked behind you for that split second. AdultFriendFinder is not what it sounds like.

What is AdultFriendFinder?

AdultFriendFinder is one of the most well-known sites for finding quick sexual encounters, regular hookups, and literally anything else even remotely related to sex. The rowdy feed of matches, jumble of explicit photos, and stimulating calls-to-action offering all types of sex makes it heaven for anyone looking for a good time with no filter — and hell for someone who wouldn’t be caught dead clicking on a “There are hot singles in your area” ad.

Even if you’re not using it for real sex, it’s always nice to have spank bank material in your back pocket. During the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, sexting, nudes, and Pornhub searches all saw a spike thanks to the vast number of people who started social distancing at home. Those who didn’t want to risk quarantine sex or weren’t finding people on their level of horniness on Tinder were pretty much guaranteed to get their rocks off somehow via AdultFriendFinder.

On AFF, you can find someone to sext via messaging or video (and plan to get it on IRL, if that’s what you’re looking for), watch live streams, or join niche group chats. Is it worth £15-something per month? Depends on how much fishy content you’re willing to overlook for a juicy sexting session.

We reached out to Kalyn Sanders, a business development executive at Friend Finder Networks, for updated AFF demographics. Right up there with Tinder’s monthly flock, AdultFriendFinder snags the attention of over 55 million visits around the world per month, on average. To whet your appetite upon signup, the main landing page flashes a few statistics, including “98,897,765 hot photos” and “3,375,049 connections,” but we’re not exactly sure what that means. Most traffic originates from the United States, followed by visitors from the United Kingdom and Canada.

Specifics on the demographic that most people care about — the gender ratio — can be hard to track down. Sanders told us that “there’s a two to one ratio of single men versus categories like single women, couples, and groups.” The split between men and women is an expected one for a lot of hookup-centric sites. At the end of the day, it’s a paradise for straight men, hit-or-miss for straight women and LGBTQ men, and likely an actual hellscape for LGBTQ women.

AFF lets you identify as and search for a man, woman, a couple, or trans. Despite trying to be a sex-positive site with blog posts, groups, a sex academy, and more, its language for the LGBTQ community has historically been anything but inclusive or positive. Previously, the AFF sign-up page listed “TG/TV/TS” as the “trans” gender selection — we’ll let you infer what those stand for. Though, we will admit, this language has improved recently with more gender options that are appropriately labeled.

Can you find a serious relationship on AdultFriendFinder?

If you’re 100% over being grilled with relationship questions on traditional dating sites like EliteSingles and eharmony, AdultFriendFinder is your golden ticket to instant communication. Registering takes literally 30 seconds — they require nothing from you aside from an email address, a username, a password, and an introduction. Though they don’t require a bio or a picture, it’s probably best to add a few to up your chances for messages and flirtation, especially if you’re looking for something super specific, as you’re more likely to be contacted by people looking for the same thing.

After you register, you’ll see that there are loads of options to completely personalise your account (way more than we expected from a hookup site, to be honest). The more you fill out, the more attractive your profile will be to new viewers. There are the basic physical appearance questions about eye and hair colour, plus more intimate details.

There’s also a personality test that seemed pretty close to something you’d see on Match or eharmony, and we guess it’s comforting to know that some people on here care about what’s on the inside as well.

One of the funniest forms was the “Purity Test,” featuring 100 hilariously-worded questions about how far you’re willing to go sexually. It felt like the sexy 20 questions game that you’d play with your middle school crush when neither of you knew how to flirt, but we guess this information is pertinent when you’re on a site that’s all about sex.

There’s no real matching strategy other than the basic info on physical appearances, so don’t get your hopes up when it comes to finding a lasting connection or kindred soul — but hey, if you’re on the site for the same reasons most other people are, that stuff won’t really matter anyway.

How do you match on AdultFriendFinder?

Like a traditional dating site, AdultFriendFinderAdultFriendFinder gives you a collage of potential matches at the top of your personal home page. These will be random right after you sign up, but you can opt to update your preferences to refine your results: Choose your preferred gender(s), age range, location and mile radius, race, sexual orientation, body type, and marital status. They’ll let you know who’s online when you are, which matches are closest to you, new people who liked or messaged you, and all of that good stuff.

AdultFriendFinder is basically like a PornHub that you can interact with. We probably don’t have to say this, but AdultFriendFinder is NSFW and not safe to be on while kids are in the room. Some videos will be blurred out and read “Naughty video” until you upgrade to a Gold Membership.

The message section is set up similarly to a Gmail account, and you can mark things as read or important just as you would on a real email. How professional. You’ll also receive messages instantly, which is definitely a confidence boost even though you know they’re probably just looking for one thing.

You can tell who took the time to look at your profile and who is sending the same thing to everyone, but it’s nice to see that there is a range. Unlike more traditional dating sites, these people don’t need to talk and get to know you for months before meeting. If you’re tired of things moving too slowly or need a change of pace, it’s pretty awesome to know you can immediately make plans for each night of the week.

What does AdultFriendFinder do well?

Once you get past the in-your-face sexplosion of naked profile pictures, horny AIM-era profile names, and explicit videos, there are actually an impressive number of resources to help make your experience as satisfying as possible. Some will cost money even outside of the paid subscription, which is kinda dumb.

Aside from the NSFW content, the website is relatively straightforward (albeit ugly). Every feature is advertised in big letters, notifications are displayed clearly with labels, and you don’t really have to click around to find anything. This makes it super accessible for users of all ages, even those who aren’t tech-savvy and can’t even figure out Facebook. Buttons are all over the place, but you figure it out after messing around for a few minutes.

Activities range from direct messaging, sending virtual gifts, watching live videos of people in your feed, joining adult chat rooms that can get very niche, or entering photo contests.

Think of AdultFriendFinder as the dating site version of New York City — it never sleeps. You’ll find people who work the regular 9-5, people who work the night shift, and people in other time zones, so it’s nearly impossible to log on and not have a lot of people to talk to. You know, like that booty call who’s always awake when you text them.

Or at least that used to be the case… 10 years ago. What was once a hot site that a few Reddit users were quick to hype up is now one of the dating sites that Reddit users can’t help but diss — in the few instances that AFF is even being discussed at all. The Reddit community is diverse and open-minded, and if a dating site exists, someone on Reddit has used it and has an opinion on it. It’s notable that, on a site where online dating is such a mammoth topic of discussion, that AdultFriendFinder has rarely been mentioned since the early 2010s. When an innocent soul does ask if it’s legit, AFF usually gets dragged for sketchy pricing and being ridden with bots.

Is AdultFriendFinder available for free?

As previously mentioned, you can do a lot on the site without paying a penny: You can message people, reply to emails, and visit most profiles and chat rooms. You know, all of the basic stuff. But with just a few clicks AdultFriendFinder can send you deep down the rabbit hole, and a lot of that juicier hidden content can only be unlocked with a paid membership (called the Gold membership) or by earning points.

Points are AdultFriendFinder’s non-monetary currency. If you’re a free member, you’ll have to earn points through on-site activity to unlock stuff that’s exclusive to paying members. It’s kind of like a game, with points acting like money at the strip club. You can “tip” updates, photos, or videos from a member that you like, buy “bling” (which is basically a badge that makes you look cooler), watch racy videos that are usually blurred out or access other exclusive site content, or “buy” a Gold membership for a month. The more points you have, the more you get out of the site.

But all of that stuff takes a really long time, and is honestly just a hassle. If you want access to all those features, just pay for a Gold membership and upgrade.

If you’re a guy looking for girls, we might suggest getting a Gold membership as the standard. While researching on Reddit, we found a few girls who said they won’t meet a guy unless he’s a Gold member. A Gold membership puts a little bit more credibility behind someone’s profile and makes the entire encounter a little less threatening. It’s easier to believe that someone’s a real person if they’re a paying, active member of the site, and it’s nice to know that they’re taking it slightly seriously. Plus, if you see a picture or profile that looks like it’s five years old, it really might be — there are a ton of non-active profiles from old members and escorts still lingering on the site.

If you find yourself spending more quality time on the site than you expected, becoming a paid member is definitely something to consider. Once you’re paying, you basically become royalty on the site: Your profile will appear way higher in searches, you can use the most advanced searches, and you can read emails and message to your heart’s content (messages and emails are limited with a free account).

A Gold membership can unlock everything that the site has to offer, including unlimited messaging, profiles with private photo albums, and video profiles that are only available for Gold members as well. A general rule is that increased involvement and payment on your end generally equals more success on the website, as your constant activity and heightened search-ability makes it way easier for others to find you. Plus, you’ll just get bored with the free features after a while.

Like every other dating site, prices for a Gold membership get cheaper the longer your subscription is: one month is £25.08/month, three months is £16.71/month, and one year is £11.27/month.

Who should try AdultFriendFinder?

This is pretty obvious, but AdultFriendFinder is ace for people who want a quick hookup, people who are in a sexual rut, people who are tired of porn, and people who find sites like eharmony to be lame. Those long compatibility tests can be exhausting, and sometimes you just wanna skip the small talk and have sex. It’s gonna get kinky out there, and that’s great for those who are dying to blow off steam and are in need of someone who will respond well to a sexy message. It also might be a good place for people who are freshly out of a breakup and in need of attention.

Did we mention it’s also a huge confidence boost? People are so active on this site, it’s impossible not to feel adored. Just seeing the notifications of users wanting to talk to you will make your heart flutter, and you’ll start to loosen up. Even if you’re rejected a few times, you’ll learn which opening lines and flirty comments work and which don’t, making you a smoother operator.

AdultFriendFinders pro-sex, judgment-free environment means it’s open to everyone and highly inclusive, no matter your gender identity or sexual orientation. The variety of people on this thing is so massive that it’s nearly impossible to not to meet someone.

As with all dating sites, catfishing is a big buzzkill. Your chances of being pursued are way higher if you have a lot of pictures of the same person (AKA you), videos, and a genuine profile that lets people know they’re not dealing with something sketchy. Even if you’ve had bad luck with online dating in the past, AdultFriendFinder is the place to 100% be yourself.

The site may look like an ad for a strip club, but don’t judge a dating site by its cover. If you’re willing to look past the questionable design choices, AdultFriendFinder can seriously expand your sexual horizons and introduce you to individuals you never would have met otherwise.

Who should avoid AdultFriendFinder?

You know those warnings that thrill rides at amusement parks are required to put up that tell people who get dizzy easily or have heart problems to not get on the ride? AdultFriendFinder could use something like that. This site is not for the faint of heart — if you’re a cynic, conservative by any means, or get sketched out easily, you’re probably going to hate it. If you appreciate a well-crafted, aesthetically pleasing website that feels safe — no matter how badly you want to have sex — then this dating site is probably not for you. Nothing is left to the imagination here, and it’s definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. You have got to be open minded.

AdultFriendFinder is not the place to be if you’re trying to make friends, unless “with benefits” is tacked onto the end. Every inch of the site screams “this website is used to have sex,” and you should really listen to that. You might get a date out of it, but don’t expect the person to introduce you to their parents.

But this isn’t to say that meaningful connections or finding a genuine adult friend (get it?) is impossible. There is always the chance of a pure friendship, particularly between two like-minded individuals.

What could AdultFriendFinder do better?

The entire website looks like an ad about hot MILFs that pops up when you’re illegally streaming a movie. Seriously, it’s bad. Even though the website is technically legit, the pictures, word choice, and exclamation points everywhere scream “scam.” No, AdultFriendFinder, “98,897,765 Hot Photos” is not the way to make potential new users trust you.

We’re not knocking a quick hookup or no-strings-attached relations. This isn’t about morals. Genitals are quite literally in your face from the moment you make an account, and that’s just not cute. There are chiller ways to go about insinuating that this is a hookup website without feeling like you’re trapped in a sex dungeon with strangers.

It’s difficult to get past the fact that the entire site looks like it’s about to invite five viruses to your computer. We’re talking terrible graphics that look like they were made on Microsoft Paint and pictures of women who look like they’re from Pornhub in 2007. Reddit user Snoo53279 summed it up in a comment from July 2020: “The people on AFF are definitely real, but there is a huge smattering of bots that also get in the way so it can be a bit of a PITA to use.” If they’re not bots, they could be men posing as a couple to seem less threatening.

The parade of women on the landing page is questionable for two reasons. This shouldn’t even need to be clarified, but not everyone is looking for a woman. At the least, the advertising just isn’t inclusive — but this crosses into fetishisation territory. The cherry on top is that the women in the photos (unsurprisingly) probably aren’t even members on the site, according to a disclaimer at the bottom of the landing page.

AdultFriendFinder’s overall outdated vibe goes past an aesthetic annoyance — it’s downright problematic at times. The “TS/TV/TGs” part of sign-up is nearly unforgivable, and we’d be scared to see some of the related rhetoric that AFF users feel comfortable spewing. Without even a dash of social awareness, it’s hard to see how anyone who’s not an out-of-touch straight cis man would feel comfortable on this site.

Attempting to navigate the shoddy design might just be enough to smother your horniness. Three main issues can make the site borderline unusable: It looks shady as hell, an alarming portion of the user base is made up of bots and spam accounts, and the user interface itself is outdated and rife with bugs.

Other Reddit users mention that the desktop web version won’t even load for them at random times — an especially frustrating roadblock for people who want to end their membership and stop monthly charges. A solution to the laggy web version might be to clear your cache or use the smartphone app instead, but your experience probably won’t get better there. AFF’s mobile page doesn’t even mention an Android app, and the link to the iPhone app brings up a “not available” pop-up in the App Store. For a site that claims to have over 50 million visitors each month, the lack of accessibility to a smartphone app is just plain odd — especially in 2021.

Adding to the sketchiness, a network hack in 2016 exposed around 412 million accounts, including “deleted” accounts that weren’t actually deleted from the database. If this is enough reason for you to fall back on Tinder for finding a friend with benefits, we don’t blame you. Signing up with a burner email and avoiding using your real name as a username are wise moves (just pick a naughty word and add 69 to the end, maybe), though keeping your personal information private is hard when credit cards are involved.

In 2007, AFF was involved in a lawsuit with the FTC over allegations that the site used malware to send explicit pop-up ads to computers owned by people who hadn’t signed up for the service. Though we haven’t seen reports like this recently, so we’re hoping those ridiculous ads you see are at least confined to people who actually use the site.

What is the best alternative to AdultFriendFinder?

Surprisingly, AdultFriendFinder is one of the more tame hookup sites out there. While other hookup sites have names like Swing Towns and Instabang.com, AdultFriendFinder is probably the safest in terms of your Google search history. Most have the same general idea, which is to find sexual partners, have cyber sex, etc, but with names like those, you do start to question the authenticity. AdultFriendFinder is one of the biggest players in the world of legitimate adult dating/hookup sites and boasts a way larger and more diverse audience than a lot of these newer sites.

Horny Matches is one newer dating site that could be starting to slide in, but it hasn’t stolen AdultFriendFinder’s thunder just yet, perhaps due to its dodgy name. It does have its advantages, though. Horny Matches’ first advantage is just that it’s more modern and looks cleaner. The title is more obvious, but the main page encourages “taking the first step” rather than mentioning the words “horny” and “sex” multiple times. The audience isn’t nearly as large as AdultFriendFinder, though, and most people will take more options and a less over an aesthetically pleasing app.

Is AdultFriendFinder right for you?

AdultFriendFinder is possibly the easiest, most low pressure way to find a friends-with-benefits situation without insulting anyone. Everyone is pretty much there for the same reason — and though it’ll feel pretty unorthodox if you’ve only ever used to Tinder to scope this type of thing out, AFF’s blunt advertising at least means you won’t have to explain that you’re not looking for a relationship. It’s niche-friendly, well-populated, and has a lot of interactive outlets to indulge your primal urges.

But that freedom comes with a price — the price being feeling like one of those people who falls for the ads that pop up before a free Pornhub video. It’s not that a site dedicated to sex and sexting is inherently scammy — it’s that AdultFriendFinder drowns you with explicit photos on profiles who might not even be real people while asking you to pay for a subscription with every click. Unfortunately, no matter how in the mood you are, some people aren’t cut out for the nothing-left-to-the-imagination approach with grammar mistakes all over the place. It wants to be sex-positive so badly, but the way sign-up talks about the trans community is the furthest thing from that.

The functionality and safety of the site and the mobile app aren’t where they need to be in 2021. If security measures were tightened, graphics and photos were cleaned up to feel more relevant, and decision-makers behind the scenes were given a lesson in inclusivity and pronouns/identities, AdultFriendFinder could be a handy tool to find attachment-free hookups and connect with a community that’s down for anything.

If you’re brave enough to jump into the action, you can register for AdultFriendFinder. Good luck out there — and don’t try this at work.

Samsung Galaxy S24 rumors: Release date, price, features, specs, and more

Posted on:

Samsung Galaxy S24 leaks and rumors have been pouring in; here’s a compilation of everything we know so far about the upcoming line.
Samsung Galaxy S23

Samsung Galaxy S24 rumors are heating up after Apple’s iPhone 15 reveal in early September. People who practice mobile OS agnosticism – folks who have no loyalty toward Android nor iPhone – may be wondering which flagship line will win ‘em over. Or perhaps Samsung Galaxy S-series fans are watching the leaks closely, wondering whether they should upgrade from their older phones.

Regardless of why you’re here, we’re going to pull the curtains back on all the rumors we know so far about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra phones.

Samsung Galaxy S24 release date

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is rumored to have a release date some time in January or February of next year. Take a look at its predecessors’ release dates:

  • Samsung Galaxy S21: Jan. 29, 2021

  • Samsung Galaxy S22: Feb. 25, 2022

  • Samsung Galaxy S23: Feb. 1, 2023

The Galaxy S23 line was revealed at Galaxy Unpacked on Feb. 1, and while the Samsung Galaxy S24 could get unveiled in early February, too, a new rumor from South Korean outlet The Elec disputes this.

The publication claims that Samsung plans on choosing an earlier release date for the Galaxy S24 series. How much earlier? The South Korean tech giant allegedly plans to push it back by one month, which means we may see the next-generation flagship phone line in January 2024.

Samsung Galaxy S24 price

There haven’t been many leaks about the Samsung Galaxy S24’s pricing, but there’s one thing to note before I dive into the whispers we’ve been hearing. According to The Elec, Samsung has been considering nixing the Plus model from its line. Why? To put it succinctly, buyers have had a tendency to purchase either the cheapest model or the most premium one – not the mid-tier variant.

However, X leaker @Tech_Reve, a bean spiller that TechRadar claims has a “respectable track record,” is skeptical. They claim that gossip about Samsung axing the Galaxy S24 are “confused rumors.” I’m leaning toward @Tech_Reve on this one. While I do suspect there have been internal talks at Samsung about potentially ending the Plus model, I don’t believe the Samsung Galaxy S24 line will be the one to do it.

Again, there’s currently not much in the rumor mill about the next-generation phones’ pricing, which may indicate that there won’t be a price hike next year. Let’s take a look at the starting prices of the last three generations:

  • Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra: $799, $999, $1,199

  • Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra: $799, $999, $1,199

  • Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra: $799, $999, $1,199

Pricing has been consistent since Samsung unleashed the Galaxy S21 line in 2021. Could this change next year? With inflation driving price hikes in the tech realm, it’s possible, but we won’t know for sure until we hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.

Samsung Galaxy S24 design

The Samsung Galaxy S23 dropped that camera module block that enveloped the Samsung Galaxy S22. But for this next-generation line, according to @Tech_Reve, we won’t be seeing any major changes to the design language.

In collaboration with @Onleaks, a bean spiller with a decent track record, SmartPrix dropped high-quality renders of the entry-level Galaxy S24.

It looks like the Samsung Galaxy S24 will sport the same squared-off design as its predecessor. It also still has a bump-less camera module and a trio of lenses. However, SmartPrix claims that the Galaxy S24 will be slightly taller and slimmer than the S23.

Ice Universe, another respected leaker in the tech space, claims that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will get the most salient tweaks. It will likely drop its curved-screen aesthetics for a flat-panel look. @Onleaks, on the other hand, claims that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will have a design that blends both a curved and flat design.

@Onleaks, again, in collaboration with SmartPrix, claims that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has even slimmer bezels compared to its predecessor. According to SmartPrix, it is one of the “narrowest bezels” seen on any smartphone.

Like the iPhone 15, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is getting an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) antenna, which will make it easier for you to track down your device. The upper-tier Samsung Galaxy S24 model is expected to be slightly shorter than its predecessor, but a tinge wider. And finally, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra may get a brightness bump to 2,200 nits, an upgrade from its predecessor’s 1,750 nits.

Ice Universe suggested that, similar to the iPhone 15 Pro models, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will be made of titanium, ditching the Ultra’s signature “Armor Aluminum” frame. (Forbes’ Ewan Spence also claims that the Samsung Galaxy S24 could switch to titanium.)

Another rumor claims that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will ditch one of its telephoto lenses, dropping its four-camera system to a trio-lens module, but we’ll dive into this later.

Samsung Galaxy S24 colors

According to GSMArena, the new colors for the entry-level Samsung Galaxy S24 are the following

  • Black

  • Gray

  • Violet

  • Yellow

The first two colors are typically labeled “Phantom Black” and “Graphite,” and they’re no stranger to the Galaxy S series line. However, violet and yellow are hues we haven’t seen for several generations. As GSMArena pointed out, we had a violet colorway with the S21 series, but we haven’t had a yellow hue since the Galaxy S10e.

Samsung Galaxy S24 display

According to Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus – the mid-tier model – will get a negligible bump in display size (6.65 inches vs. 6.6 inches). Let’s take a look at the screen sizes of both generations:

Samsung Galaxy S23 display size

  • Samsung Galaxy S23+ – 6.6 inches

  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra – 6.8 inches

Samsung Galaxy S24 display size (rumored)

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 – 6.1 inches

  • Samsung Galaxy S24+ – 6.65 inches

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra – 6.8 inches

The same leaker also claims that the resolution gap between the S24+ and the S24 Ultra will narrow; the mid-tier model will join the top-tier variant in getting a better-quality WQHD+ resolution.

As it stands now, all three Galaxy S23 models have 120Hz refresh rate displays. Keep in mind, however, that only the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a variable refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz; the lower-tier models have a dynamic refresh rate between 48Hz and 120Hz. What does this mean? Well, the Ultra can dive down all the way to 1Hz when you’re not particularly active on your phone, which means the screen is refreshing much less. This preserves battery life. The lower-tier Samsung Galaxy S23 models can only drop down to 48Hz, which means it may be refreshing the screen even when your task doesn’t call for such a high rate.

However, we have a strong inkling that the Galaxy S24 and S24+ models will now have the ability to drop to 1Hz. How do we know? Ice Universe claims that they will now use an LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panel (which is featured on the Ultra model), giving the lower-tier variants the opportunity to smoothly transition between 1Hz and 120Hz.

As a cherry on top, according to SamLover, Samsung may upgrade the Ultra variant to 144Hz. What does this mean for you? Navigating through your phone will feel more seamless, smoother and more responsive. Mobile gaming should feel zippier, too.

Finally, according to Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy S24+ is getting slimmer bezels (2.5mm vs. 3.4mm).

Samsung Galaxy S24 cameras

There are conflicting reports regarding the Samsung Galaxy S24 cameras. In June, Ice Universe claimed they secured the camera specs for the Ultra model from “Korean sources.”

The listed specs are largely the same as before, but two months later, Ice Universe changed their tune, suggesting that the Ultra model will feature two telephoto options: a 50MP camera with 5x optical zoom, and a 10MP lens with 3X optical zoom.

The current Ultra model has two 10MP telephoto cameras, one with 10X zoom and another with 3X zoom. This means that the 10MP, 10X sensor may get replaced with the 50MP, 5X camera. On paper, this means that the new telephoto sensor on the upcoming Ultra will have a shorter optical range before the digital-zoom software kicks in, but the picture quality should be crisper and sharper.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra:

  • Wide camera – 200MP

  • Ultrawide camera – 12MP

  • Telephoto – 10MP, 3X

  • Telephoto – 10MP, 10X

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (rumored)

  • Wide camera – 200MP

  • Ultrawide camera – 12MP

  • Telephoto – 10MP, 3X

  • Telephoto – 50MP, 5X

IceUniverse also took to Weibo on Oct. 28 to showcase some leaked images of protective cases that appear to be for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. According to the pictures, as Tom’s Guide pointed out, Samsung may consider consolidating the two telephoto lenses into a single camera.

As far as the other models are concerned, there’s not much in the rumor mill about them. But if things remain relatively consistent, the lower-tier models will continue to sport a 50MP wide camera, a 10MP 3X telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide shooter with a 120-degree field of view.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra specs and new features

According to SamMobile, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will power the next-generation Samsung Galaxy S-series line. Citing a report from China, SamMobile added that the new chipset will have a GPU that’s 50 percent faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside the Galaxy S23 line.

Interestingly, the Adreno 740 inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is faster than the graphics packed inside A16 Bionic, which you can find inside the iPhone 14 Pro models. So the question is, will the next-gen GPU, likely to be called Adreno 750, beat the A17 Pro inside the iPhone 15 Pro models in graphics prowess? Only time will tell.

SamMobile also reported that the entire Galaxy S24 line will start with 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. This presumably means that you won’t have to shell out more to increase your phone’s space. The Ultra model may have a variant that comes with 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM.

Finally, Samsung may take a page out of Apple’s playbook and introduce satellite connectivity to the new S24 line.

iPhone 16: Release date, price, specs, features, and more

Posted on:

iPhone 16 rumors are heating up. Let’s dive into all the leaks for the next-generation flagship line.
iPhone 15

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro rumors are flooding in – and it’s only been a few weeks since Apple unveiled the iPhone 15. The next-gen phones are expected to hit store shelves in September 2024, but we’re already hearing whispers about a phone that we won’t see until next year.

Although it’s early days, we’re already hearing whispers about a RAM boost for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, on the other hand, are reportedly getting some striking upgrades to the cameras that may dazzle the masses. Here’s a compilation of everything we know so far about next year’s iPhone 16 line.

iPhone 16 release date

The iPhone 16 release date is expected to be September of next year. After Apple has its whole shebang of an event showcasing the next-generation handsets, the iPhones typically ship about a week or two later.

In the past, Apple has deviated from this cadence due to reported production hindrances (e.g., supply chain issues). For example, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 14 Plus shipped in October, but typically, get unveiled some time during the first half of September every year.

iPhone 16 design

Let’s dive into arguably the most important aspect of the iPhone’s design: the screen. There haven’t been any significant changes to the display sizes since the iPhone 12, but according to reliable leaker Unknownz21, the upper-tier iPhone 16 models are going to be a little bit more unwieldy in your hands.

Display

The iPhone 16 Pro will reportedly have a 6.3-inch display while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will pack a 6.9-inch panel. You may be wondering, “What about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus? Will they get a screen size bump, too?” The answer is likely no. The lower-tier models will reportedly have the same display sizes as their predecessors.

iPhone 15 screen sizes

  • iPhone 15 – 6.1 inches

  • iPhone 15 Plus – 6.7 inches

  • iPhone 15 Pro – 6.1 inches

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max – 6.7 inches

iPhone 16 screen sizes (rumored)

  • iPhone 16 – 6.1 inches

  • iPhone 16 Plus – 6.7 inches

  • iPhone 16 Pro – 6.3 inches

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max – 6.9 inches

Ross Young, a well-known display analyst and Apple leaker, was the first to claim that the iPhone 16 Pro models will have larger screens.

However, he offered slightly different numbers: 6.2 inches and 6.8 inches. What could be the reason behind the discrepancy? According to MacRumors, it’s “likely due to the difference between actual display area and viewable display area.”

Solid-state buttons

Apple reportedly planned on introducing solid-state buttons with the iPhone 15 Pro models, but instead, we got a customizable Action Button. For the uninitiated, solid-state buttons aren’t buttons per se – they’re panels that feature haptic feedback sensations that simulate real button presses (Think of the iPhone SE series’ Home button). On the plus side, the solid-state buttons aren’t totally out of the picture. According to respected Apple leaker and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on debuting solid-state buttons on the iPhone 16 Pro models instead.

Kuo added that these solid-state buttons will add two additional Taptic Engines, which will help fire off tangible feedback to users. (If this is true, the number of Taptic Engines in the iPhone 16 will increase to three — up from one.)

According to a tip from Weibo (via MacRumors), the Action Button on the iPhone 16 Pro will be a solid-state button and sit flush against the chassis. To make room for this change, Apple will reportedly move the mmWave antenna to the left of the iPhone 16 Pro as opposed to the right. This Weibo tip comes from a leaker with the moniker “Instant Digital,” a bean spiller that reportedly has an accurate track record, according to MacRumors.

iPhone 16 cameras

Apple debuted a new zoom lens with a “tetra-prism” design on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which simply means that engineers found a way to “fold” the shooter so that it still has telephoto capabilities without taking up too much space. This new camera increases the Pro Max’s optical zoom from 3x to 5x.

However, according to Digital Chat Station (DCS), a bean-spiller on the Chinese social media site Weibo, both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will get the new tetra-prism telephoto camera.

According to Jeff Pu, a tech analyst from Haitong International Securities (a Hong Kong investment firm), the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will also feature a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera with better light gathering. As such, camera performance in dimmer environments should improve. As it stands now, the iPhone 15 Pro models have a 12MP ultrawide camera. The ultrawide camera is perfect for taking landscape photos, allowing you to capture more scenery. However, compared to the main camera, the ultrawide lens tends to deliver a slight drop in crispness and sharpness. If this rumor is true, the new 48-megapixel ultrawide camera may ameliorate this minor foible.

Finally, Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple will upgrade the rear cameras on the iPhone 16 Pro models, introducing a stacked design. What will a stacked design do? According to Apple Insider, it increases light capture and provides wider dynamic range, so Night Mode should get a sweet boost.

iPhone 16 specs

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 8GB of RAM while the lower-tier models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max, are stuck with their predecessors’ 6GB of RAM. If that bums you out, don’t worry. According to Pu, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to join the 8GB of RAM bandwagon, too.

As for the chip, you may not be happy to read this, but Pu added that the A17 Pro’s successor will reportedly be less efficient. In other words, the iPhone 16 models equipped with this chip may take a battery life hit. This is because the next-generation chip will offer tremendous performance gains at the expense of power efficiency. We certainly hope this rumor isn’t true, but time will tell.

The iPhone 16 Pro models will also reportedly support Wi-Fi 7 (current models support WiFi 6E). Wi-Fi 7 should offer zippy transfer speeds that exceed 40 Gbps, quadrupling what WiFi 6E can do.

According to Pu (via 9to5Mac), the iPhone 16 Pro will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 modem, which can reach a 5G download rate of up to 7.5 Gbps.

We’ll periodically update this rumor hub as new iPhone 16 leaks trickle in, so be sure to bookmark this page.
