There are a number of world-famous horse racing events, but only the Melbourne Cup is known as “the race that stops the nation”. So whether you’re a massive fan of horse racing, or you just like seeing all the jockeys in their colourful outfits, it’s an event that you won’t want to miss.

If you want to watch the 2023 Melbourne Cup for free from anywhere in the world, we have all the information you need.

What is the Melbourne Cup?

The Melbourne Cup is a thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3,200-metre race for three-year-olds and older, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse. It’s the richest “two-mile” handicap in the world.

When is the Melbourne Cup in 2023?

If you’re interested in following all the action from the four big days of the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival, here’s the schedule you need to memorise:

  • Nov. 4 — Penfolds Victoria Derby Day

  • Nov. 4 — Lexus Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw

  • Nov. 7 — Lexus Melbourne Cup Day

  • Nov. 9 — Kennedy Oaks Day

  • Nov. 11 — TAB Champions Stakes Day

The Melbourne Cup takes place at 3 p.m. AEDT on Nov. 7, which is a public holiday in the city.

How to watch the Melbourne Cup for free

You can watch all the action from the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival on Network 10, with free livestreaming available on 10 Play.

The problem with 10 Play is that it is geo-restricted to Australia. That’s frustrating, but anyone can access this free streaming service with a VPN. These tools can hide your real IP address (digital location) and connect you to a secure server in Australia, meaning you can bypass geo-restrictions to watch 10 Play from anywhere in the world.

Unblock 10 Play from anywhere in the world by following these simple steps:

  1. Subscribe to a VPN (like ExpressVPN)

  2. Download the app to your device of choice (the best VPNs have apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, and more)

  3. Open up the app and connect to a server in Australia

  4. Visit 10 Play

  5. Watch the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival for free

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a revamp of the legendary 2011 game of the same name, and we absolutely cannot wait to play.

This eagerly anticipated game is set for release on Nov. 8, which means players from around the world will be preparing to roll back the clock and engage in a marathon session. It will be just like the good old days, right?

We don’t want to bring the vibe down, but the 2023 version uses Skill-Based Matchmaking. This is meant to match people of relatively similar skill levels before each game. This has caused a lot of complaints, as some gamers believe this makes the game too competitive and punishes those looking for a more casual gaming experience.

This is frustrating, but all is not lost because gamers can use VPNs to get the most out of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Do you need a VPN for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?

If you’re looking to dominate the battlefield, you could benefit from investing in a gaming-friendly VPN. These services offer everything you need for a secure and successful gaming experience.

You can use a VPN to secure access to easier lobbies when playing online. VPNs can hide your real IP address (digital location) and connect you to a secure server in another location, tricking Call of Duty into thinking you are based elsewhere. That means you could connect to a country with fewer active gamers, so your chance of meeting skilled players is reduced.

This process sounds complicated, but it’s actually really straightforward:

  1. Sign up for a streaming-friendly VPN (like ExpressVPN)

  2. Download the app to your device of choice (the best VPNs have apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, and more)

  3. Open up the app and connect to a server in a country with fewer active gamers (Turkey or Eastern European is recommended)

  4. Play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

  5. Find lobbies with less skilled opponents

What is the best VPN for gaming?

There are a number of gaming-friendly VPNs, including NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN. These will get the job done, but ExpressVPN is the best of the best. This high-speed VPN offers everything you need to improve your gaming experience:

  • Servers in 94 countries

  • Easy-to-use app available on all major devices including iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, routers, and more

  • Strict no-logging policy so your data is secure

  • Fast connection speeds free from throttling

  • Up to five simultaneous connections

  • 30-day money-back guarantee

A one-year subscription to ExpressVPN is on sale for £82.82, saving you 49% on list price. This plan includes an extra three months of coverage and a year of unlimited cloud backup for free. All subscribers also get a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can recover your cash if things don’t work out.

Apple 10/30 event: The entire ‘Scary Fast’ live stream was filmed on iPhone

Posted on:

Apple used the iPhone 15 Pro Max to film the ‘Scary Fast’ live stream.
Apple event filmed on iPhone

My jaw dropped when I read the final words of Apple’s “Scary Fast” Mac event: “This event was shot on iPhone.”

You mean to tell me that while Apple showcased its refreshed M3-series MacBook Pros and iMac, and even dropped a stunning new Space Black colorway for the M3 Pro and the M3 Max Macs, all of that spooky pomp and circumstance was filmed on a smartphone? No way!

Which iPhone did Apple use for the ‘Scary Fast’ Mac event?

Apple used the iPhone 15 Pro Max to film the Apple ‘Scary Fast’ event and we are shook. I mean, we knew that the iPhone 15 Pro Max had industry-leading camera specs. Check out some of the top-notch features below:

  • 4K video recording up to 60 fps

  • Cinematic Mode (a rack-focus feature introduced with iPhone 13 Pro models) up to 4K HDR at 30 fps

  • Action Mode (a feature that introduces stabilization for high-activity recording) at 60 fps

  • HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60 fps

  • ProRes video recording up to 4K at 60ps (ProRes is an Apple-developed compressed video format that produces high-quality files for video production)

  • Macro video recording, including slo-mo and time-lapse

  • Slo-mo video support for 1080p at up to 240 fps

Plus, as we tested in our review with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Pro camera system blew us away with its sharp 48MP wide camera and 12MP ultra-wide shooter. It’s also packed with two telephoto cameras — one of ’em consists of Apple’s star-of-the-show “tetraprism design” that enables up to 5x optical zoom.

However, by putting these envelope-pushing specs into practice, Apple really put iPhone 15 Pro Max’s capabilities into perspective.

A professional filmmaker directed the event

Apple tapped into Brian Oakes, the man behind Jim: The James Foley Story and Living with Lincoln, to film the “Scary Fast” Mac event.

“We were able to get the same complex shots with iPhone 15 Pro Max,” Oakes said. “It’s amazing to see that the quality from a device that is so small and so portable can rival a large $20,000 camera.”

Jon Carr, Apple’s Pro Workflow Video Specialist, was also flabbergasted that the event was filmed with a “tiny little iPhone” that powered 50 monitors with USB-C out. “This whole piece was low-light, and low-light is a little bit more challenging. And we nailed that.”

But of course, Apple still deployed some of the traditional top-level equipment you see on any major film set, including cranes, dollies, drones, and more.

Apple transparently revealed that it used the Blackmagic Camera app, an iOS exclusive, to film “Scary Fast,” which adds Hollywood feature film-esque digital camera controls.

The new iDevices Apple revealed at the event include the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro, the 14-inch and 16-inch M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro models, and an M3 iMac. For a more in-depth look of everything announced at the event, click here.

On Monday, Apple announced a bunch of new Mac computers. On Tuesday, Apple revealed how they made the announcement video.

In a video uploaded to Apple’s YouTube channel, the Cupertino-based tech giant went behind the scenes of its “Scary Fast” MacBook announcement stream. It’s a quick two-minute slice of production info, but it’s kind of cool to see, regardless. The most interesting tidbit is that the whole thing was shot on an iPhone 15 Pro. Phone cameras are real good now, huh?

$899 is no longer a particularly uncommon price to see this M2 MacBook Air at, yet we’re no less excited when we see it return to this all-time low price. That’s because for under $1,000 you get impressive M2 power, a 13.6-inch display (trust us, you’ll notice the difference from a 13.3-inch display), and a keyboard that Mashable’s Alex Perry described as “kingly.” Whether you’re a student, looking for a work-from-home workhorse, or looking for an everyday laptop to replace your old, dusty MacBook, we’re willing to bet you’ll be more than happy with the M2 Air.

Why we like it

The iPhone 15 may be the shiniest new Apple toy, and while the deals on the phone certainly aren’t bad, they are contingent upon you having a decent trade-in. If you feel any doubt in your trade-in power, going for this Verizon deal on the 14 Plus requires none — only that you open a new line on select unlimited plans. Still some hoops, but far fewer to get an $800 phone basically for free.

The AirPods Pro are some of the best noise-canceling buds in the business, and Walmart’s randomly decided to bring them back to their Prime Day (and record-low) pricing this week. At the time of writing, these buds are sold out at Amazon. Mashable Senior Editor Stan Schroeder wrote in his review that these AirPods are “the first pair of earbuds I’d actually consider taking on an airplane (instead of my much larger and clunkier over-ear headphones).”

How to make your iPhone’s light flash when you can’t find it

Posted on:

If you have both an iPhone and an Apple Watch, you can use the latter to make your phone’s light flash when you can’t find it.
An iPhone 15.

One of the most useful benefits to having an Apple Watch is its ability to ping your iPhone. Phones are notoriously easy to misplace, forcing you to waste time searching for them when you’re just about to head out the door. Fortunately, the Apple Watch has a button you can press that causes your iPhone to make a noise so you can find it.

This Apple Watch feature is relatively well-known. What’s less well-known is that you can also make your lost iPhone flash its light to help you find it more quickly. This feature was originally intended to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing locate their phones, but there’s no reason everyone else can’t benefit from it as well.

Here’s how to remotely make your iPhone flash its light so you can find it.

Total Time

  • 30 seconds
What You Need

  • iPhone
  • Apple Watch

Step 1:
Press the side button on your Apple Watch to open the Control Center.

The side button is located on the right side of your watch, below the Digital Crown. Don’t confuse it with the Action button if you have an Apple Watch Ultra. The Action button is orange, and on the left side of the watch.

Step 2:
Press and hold the Ping your iPhone button.

The Ping your iPhone button is an image of an iPhone with waves radiating for either side of it. The important step here is to hold the button. Simply tapping it will only cause the sound to play without the light.

Your phone will make a sound to alert you to its location, while its flashlight will flash five times. It won’t continue though, so you’ll have to trigger it again if you still haven’t found your device. Mashable’s tests also found that the light won’t flash if your iPhone screen is unlocked — though you probably won’t need the flashing light if it is.
