Horror fanatics, gore enthusiasts, and demonic film devotees looking for a scary movie to rev up those Halloween engines, When Evil Lurks is officially available for your streaming pleasure. If you can stomach it, that is.

When Evil Lurks tells the tale of a demonic infection that begins in a nearby farmhouse and spreads across a rural community through heinous possession and cruel violence. The two main characters, brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodriguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón), attempt to rid the town of evil, and upon failing, attempt to flee from it. But, as Mashable’s film critic Kristy Puchko puts it, “you should know this is not a story with a happy ending.”

Here’s a taste of what you’re in for:

Where is When Evil Lurks streaming?

When Evil Lurks is still in select theaters, but as of Oct. 27, you can also watch it on smaller screens at home. It made its streaming debut on Shudder — a streaming platform dedicated to horror — just in time for a Halloween viewing sesh and is streaming on AMC+ as well. Here are all the best ways to sign up and stream the horrifying possession tale.

Best for horror fans: Shudder subscription

Shudder subscription

free 30-day trial with code FRIGHTRAGS, then $6.99/month

Horror fanatics who want to watch When Evil Lurks for free should definitely take advantage of the 30-day free Shudder trial. Just enter the code FRIGHTRAGS in the promo code box and the seven-day trial will turn into a 30-day trial for you to poke around and watch as many freaky films as you desire.

Want to keep your subscription after your trial period ends? It’ll cost you $71.88 (or $5.99/month) if you pay for an entire year upfront or $6.99/month if you opt for a monthly membership. Either way, your subscription will automatically renew until you cancel. Note that the free trial is only available for new or returning subscribers.

Best for Amazon Prime users: Shudder Prime Video add-on

Shudder Prime Video add-on

free 7-day trial, then $6.99/month

If you’re an Amazon Prime Video subscriber, you can subscribe to Shudder as an add-on to your account. That way, you don’t need to remember yet another password and download another app. You can simply access When Evil Lurks and other horror films on Shudder via your Prime Video account. You can test things out for seven days before fully committing — which gives you plenty of time to watch When Evil Lurks — then decide whether you want to keep your subscription going for $6.99/month. You can cancel at any time in your Amazon account details.

Best for more than just horror: AMC+ subscription

AMC+

free 7-day trial, then starting at $4.99/month

If you want to watch When Evil Lurks, but don’t necessarily want to subscribe to an all-horror streaming service, AMC+ is a better option for you. It has a splash of Shudder’s content, including When Evil Lurks, plus AMC content, IFC Films, BBC America, Sundance Now, and more. In other words, it offers a lot more than just horror films. You can kick things off with a seven-day free trial, then you can choose to subscribe for as low as $4.99/month (if you don’t mind ads). Just remember that your subscription will auto-renew until you cancel.

Honorable mention: AMC+ Prime Video add-on

AMC+ Prime Video add-on

free 7-day trial, then $8.99/month

Like the Shudder add-on, you can tack AMC+ onto your Amazon Prime Video account. The only downfall is that after your seven-day free trial, it’ll auto-renew for the most expensive $8.99/month plan without the option to downgrade your account. It’s still a great way to watch When Evil Lurks for free, but just remember to cancel before your seven-day trial is up if you don’t want to be charged full price.

Wordle today: The answer and hints for October 31

Posted on:

Here’s the answer for “Wordle” #864 on October 31, as well as a few hints, tips, and clues to help you solve it yourself.
Wordle game displayed on a phone and a laptop screen

Happy Halloween! Let’s find out if today’s Wordle puzzle is a little treat or a bit tricky. As always, we’re serving up our daily hints and tips to help you figure out the answer.

If you just want to be told today’s word, you can skip to the end of this article for Oct. 31’s Wordle solution revealed. But if you’d rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Not the day you’re after? Here’s the Wordle answer for Oct. 30.

What’s the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you prefer to be strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles used to be available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it. Unfortunately, it has since been taken down, with the website’s creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn’t any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle‘s Hard Mode if you’re after more of a challenge, though.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

Though usually Wordle will only accept one correct solution per day, occasionally it has rebelled against the norm and deem two different answers acceptable. This is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after it acquired the puzzle game.

The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it’s a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.

Here’s a subtle hint for today’s Wordle answer:

A great word to describe the news.

Does today’s Wordle answer have a double letter?

Not today!

Today’s Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with…

Today’s Wordle starts with the letter B.

What’s the answer to Wordle today?

Get your last guesses in now, because it’s your final chance to solve today’s Wordle before we reveal the solution.

Drumroll please!

The solution to Wordle #864 is…

BLEAK.

Don’t feel down if you didn’t manage to guess it this time. There will be a new Wordle for you to stretch your brain with tomorrow, and we’ll be back again to guide you with more helpful hints.

New ‘Space Black’ MacBook Pro color announced at Apple 10/30 event

Posted on:

Apple had a surprise at its M3 Halloween eve event: Its first black MacBook Pro offering in over 10 years.

Apple decided to do something a bit out of the ordinary with its latest product debut: an Apple event announcing the new line of M3 laptops on the night before Halloween.

Spooky!

But along with some horror-themed music and interstitials between segments, Apple had an actual product announcement that fit the Halloween spirit: a new “Space Black” MacBook Pro.

Meet the new ‘Space Black’ MacBook Pro

Apple has certainly experimented with unique color options for its iPhones, and even iMac desktop computers, but it’s been quite a while since the company has done so with its laptops. Traditionally, the choices have been Silver or Space Gray. Now, there’s a new black hue for you to choose.

Plus, Apple claims that it consists of a finger-resistant, dark aluminum finish, but we’ll judge that when we get our sticky fingers on one to test out.

This is Apple’s first black laptop in around a decade and half. And it’s going to cost you.

At the event, Apple revealed that it was ditching the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, which had an an old, out-of-date design, and replaced it with a $1,599 14-inch MacBook Pro chassis packed with the M3 chip. However, those new M3 MacBook Pros do not come in the Space Black color.

If you really want a Space Black MacBook Pro, you’ll have to get an M3 Pro MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,999.

Yeah, it’s just a color, but perhaps you’re feeling nostalgic for the last time Apple made a black MacBook (not MacBook Pro, mind you) all the way back in 2008. Maybe that makes the extra $400 worth it.

The best meme costumes of Halloween weekend 2023

Posted on:

Halloween costumes go viral on X/Twitter and TikTok during Halloween weekend 2023.
Three Halloween costume TikToks one of Parisian bed bugs, one of Lil Timmy Tim, and one of two 'School of Rock' characters.

The unspoken rule of Halloweekend 2023 was the more esoteric, the better.

Thousands rushed to X/Twitter and TikTok to post their costumes to strangers on the internet who would get it humor AKA the hyper-online who pride themselves in niche pop culture knowledge. With phones and the ability to show (and post) a reference photo, no one is ever just dressed up as a ghost or a witch anymore, and costumes that require six layers of context to understand reign supreme online.

In a desire to flex individuality and to reach audiences that care about these sorts of costumes, two posting trends on X/Twitter and TikTok emerged, displaying the full range of in-feed creativity.

“I hate gay Halloween parties because…”

Ahead of Halloweekend, one X/Twitter user wrote, “hate going to gay halloween parties like what do you mean you’re lady gaga at the 2:53 mark of the judas music video.” The tweet garnered 35,000 likes and quickly became the premiere format for sharing your hyper-specific costume. By Sunday, costumes and their reference photos captioned with, “I hate gay Halloween parties…” flooded the timeline.

Everything from memes like Jennifer Lawerence saying “What do you mean” on Hot Ones to pop culture moments like Renee Rapp’s Sweetgreen campaign, to seemingly random moments on beloved television shows — like Tom Sandavol in drag on Vanderpump Rules — was represented. If people talked about it online, chances are someone from the internet dressed up as it. A costume doesn’t even have to be that buzzworthy: One X/Twitter user dressed up as a West Elm coaster and received over 6,800 likes.

The Halloween Skit

While on X/Twitter the reference photo dominates, over on TikTok it’s all about performing your costume to the corresponding audio. TikTok users level up from a photo to a full-on skit. Two Parisian bed bugs clinked wine glasses to the Nicki Minaj audio “Are you happy to be in Paris,” Principal Mullins and Spider acted out their scene from School of Rock, and talent show-era Timothée Chalamet performed a portion of his routine.

Once you might have posted your costume to your followers on Instagram, but now it’s easier than ever to reach strangers on X/Twitter and TikTok with the possibility of going viral — and isn’t that spooky!

Target Black Friday deals are rolling in — shop deals and gift card promos

Target’s Black Friday sale is live. New deals will drop every week, including a $259.99 50-inch QLED TV and over 50% off Sony headphones.

UPDATE: Oct. 30, 2023, 2:17 p.m. EDT Target’s Black Friday sale, which contains its biggest savings of the season, kicked off Oct. 29 and will span four weeks leading up to Black Friday. This story has been updated with the deals that are live so far.

Best early Target Black Friday deals:

Best Apple deal

9th generation Apple iPad (WiFi, 64GB)

$269.99 at Target
(save $60)

Apple iPad with colorful blobs as screensaver

Best TV deal

Philips 50-inch QLED Roku TV

$259.99 at Target
(Special Purchase pricing plus save $20)

Philips TV with neon light abstract screensaver

Best headphones deal

Black Sony wireless headphones

It’s news to no one that the “Black Friday” — singular day — nomenclature isn’t even close to an accurate depiction of how long Black Friday season actually spans. What’s still taking some getting used to, however, is Black Friday starting so early that we’re seeing the deals arranged alongside last-minute Halloween candy deals on a retailer’s home page.

Take Target, for example: It officially began releasing early Black Friday deals on Oct. 29, with new ones materializing in the following four weeks leading up to Thanksgiving weekend. All of this is part of what Target says are its best savings of the year. Best Buy is similarly ahead of the game.

If it feels like you were just reading about all of these deals Target was dropping, you were — Target Circle Week was just a few weeks ago. While the product categories seeing price slashes for Circle Week and Black Friday (TVs, video games, headphones, kitchen and cleaning appliances) are similar, you don’t need to be a Target Circle member to access a majority of Target’s early Black Friday deals as you did with Circle Week deals.

We’re keeping tabs on the best early Black Friday deals at Target as they show up:

Apple deals

Why we like it

The 9th generation iPad is already generally cheaper than its successor, the 10th generation — but to really rub it in, the 9th generation model is also seeing a better discount ($60 or 18% off versus just $50 or 11% off the 10th generation). This isn’t the iPad to choose if you plan on using your tablet for feature-intensive work like video editing or gaming, but for way less than $300, you’re still getting a solid device for casual everyday use. We’d recommend putting your savings toward the Logitech Crayon stylus, which is 15% off with this iPad purchase.

TV and gaming deals

Why we like it

A 50-inch 4K TV in the $259.99 realm is already a pretty dang good deal, let alone a QLED model. This Philips model is labeled as a special purchase, which means this is an item that may not be on Target’s website year-round and was listed at an already-low price just for the early Black Friday event. So while the 7% discount is hardly a Black Friday-level chunk off, the price is stellar to begin with.

QLED TVs feature quantum dots, which produce a much wider, brighter array of colors than non-QLED models, making colors noticably more vibrant. Because of their brightness, QLED TVs are particularly great for watching TV (especially sports) in the daylight. This particular Philips model is Dolby Vision compatible and has the Roku platform built in.

Why we like it

Sony’s Extra Bass headphones aren’t for everyone — but anyone in the EDM or bass-heavy hip-hop crowd is going to be psyched to find them for over 50% off. Though these headphones specialize in low-end frequencies, they’re not so thumpy that the rest of the notes get completely drowned out, and tweaking the sound with EQ is an option. What does get drowned out, however, is background noise when ANC is on. You can also turn on Ambient Sound Mode to let background sound, like announcements at the airport, squeeze through.
