When your knives eventually grow dull, instead of running to the nearest local knife sharpener, you can take matters into your own hands with a high-quality home knife sharpener. This holiday season, you can maintain and sharpen your favorite knives with a one-time purchase of the Angle Pro knife sharpener that comes with an angle gauge for $69.99 (reg. $199), or score a two-pack of sharpeners for only $124.99 (reg. $398).

Whether you’re using a hand-me-down knife or a fancy high-carbon steel Japanese chef knife, you can prolong its life and durability with this Kickstarter-funded knife sharpener. No knife is the same, and they shouldn’t be treated as such. That’s why this gadget includes measuring slots for knives ranging from 13 to 21 degrees so you can accurately determine your knife’s edge.

Equipped with three separate sharpening wheels, give your knife a quick touch-up by running it through the ceramic honing wheel. If that’s not enough to give your knife a cutting edge, take a few passes through the diamond sharpener. However, if your blade is in need of a completely new edge, try the tungsten rods to put a new edge on your knife for exceptional slicing and dicing

If you’re struggling with cooking, sometimes the problem is as simple as a dull knife. But don’t let that stop you from whipping up a delicious holiday spread. Gift yourself and a loved one this multi-stage sharpener available now as a one or two-pack for the best prices online:

Best tech deal: Multi-device wireless charger for $35

A multi-device wireless charger (in black or blue) from Electronic Avenue is on sale for $34.97. That’s 70% off its regular price of $119.99.
Multi-device wireless charger shown powering up a phone, Apple Watch, and AirPods

TL;DR: As of November 4, you can get a multi-device wireless charger (in black or blue) for just $34.97 instead of $119.99 — which is a savings of 70%.

Shopping for Apple techies may be challenging and expensive, but you don’t have to splurge on name-brand products to give a thoughtful and practical gift. This charger has two wireless spots for an iPhone and Apple Watch, and an additional USB-C output for a third device.

With this early-bird holiday savings event running through November 9, you can grab this multi-device wireless charger in black or blue for $34.97 (reg. $119.99).

One charger, three devices

If we had to compare this multi-device wireless charger to a name-brand Apple product, it would be the MagSafe Battery Pack (retailing for $99). However, they’re actually very different, since this one can charge three devices at the same time:

  • 5W wireless smartphone charging. Works with iPhone 12 and newer or Qi wireless-compatible Android models.

  • 3W Apple Watch charging.

  • USB-C output. Use with any cord that has USB-C on one end to charge AirPods, an additional smartphone, Bluetooth speakers, or virtually any other compatible device or gadget.

The Apple MagSafe Battery Pack doesn’t have this much versatility and convenience at such an affordable price point.

Thin, lightweight, and comes in black or blue

With this affordable alternative, you aren’t also compromising on aesthetics. It’s only half an inch thick and super lightweight for ultimate portability, and convenience when you want to use your phone while it’s charging. It also comes in your choice of black or blue to match your smartphone or color preference.

These prices are only available until November 9 at 11:59 p.m. PT, and no coupon is needed:

iPhone 15 and Pixel 8 issues show why it doesn’t always pay to be an early adopter

Posted on:

iPhone 15 and Pixel 8 both have issues. But, they are early adopter problems really.
Google logo above Apple logo on smartphone

October saw the release of two next-generation smartphones: Apple’s iPhone 15 and Google’s Pixel 8.

Almost as soon as the iPhone 15 and Pixel 8 dropped, though, complaints about both smartphones began to pile up. Overheating devices, battery problems, and a plethora of other issues have been reported across social media and on each company’s respective fan sites and official support forums.

However, for the most part, the problems aren’t with the iPhone 15 and Pixel 8. Consumers shouldn’t beware. Prospective buyers should just wait a bit. There’s no need to be an early adopter.

iPhone 15’s easy overheating fix

The overheating issue was perhaps the most prevalent problem facing the iPhone 15 immediately following its release last month. Some users were saying that they couldn’t even pick the phone up as it would get too hot. And this would occur when the phone was being used for simple web browsing –– or when the phone was charging and not being utilized at all.

Apple responded to the issue and let users know that it identified the issues: Some apps had yet to roll out an update, optimizing for the new phone. Also, there was an iOS bug that was affecting the iPhone 15, too. Those apps rolled out updates and Apple launched a new version of iOS 17 that rectified the issue. Tests found that the issue was solved and the iPhone 15 was now running much cooler. In addition, the solution didn’t hinder the device’s performance either.

If you were to buy an iPhone 15 today, weeks after launch, you likely wouldn’t even have known there was an overheating problem for Apple’s latest flagship smartphones.

It’s the software

It’s important to note that the iPhone 15 and Pixel 8 have suffered from software issues –– not hardware ones. If there was something wrong with the physical phones at a design or manufacturing level, that would likely need to be addressed via a recall of the actual devices.

But we have not seen that yet. As previously mentioned, Apple rolled out an iOS update to deal with the overheating issue. The company also managed to fix an out-of-the-box setup bug that some buyers at launch experienced with an iOS update as well.

When it comes to Google’s Pixel 8, it also appears that the latest operating system, Android 14, is the cause of these issues as well. Users of older Pixel model phones have reported bugs since updating last month. But similar issues also plagued the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 years before and were fixed via a software update.

Fixes rolled out or on the way

For Pixel 8 users, the current biggest problem appears to be connectivity issues. Owners of the latest Google smartphone have reported that the phone acts fine while connecting via WiFi, but drops calls –– or completely loses service –– when on a cellular connection.

Another major issue for Pixel 8 users is battery drain. The Pixel 8 is reportedly losing a lot of juice after very little use. But, as previously mentioned and pointed out by other outlets, Pixel users have been here before. Previous generations of the Pixel have had the same issues and most of these bugs were fixed via software or firmware updates.

Being an early adopter has its perks. You get to be one of the first on your block to show off the latest gadget. But it has its perils as well. You must deal with being a test subject, dealing with all the bugs that get fixed before the masses adopt the device.

So yeah, you should beware of the issues with the iPhone 15 and Pixel 8, but most of all, be patient. They will be fixed.

57 unique gift ideas for dads in 2023

Posted on:

Browse our favorite dad gift ideas for the holiday season. Try to think outside the gift card this year.
Collage of product photos from BrüMate, Harry's, Amazon, and Therabody.

We all know the pain and frustration that comes with picking out gifts for dad. It’s just one of the facts of life. We all have to pay taxes, groceries cost way too much, and dads are hard to shop for.

Whatever the occasion that has you looking for dad gifts (Father’s Day, for example), stay far away from clichés like whiskey stones and pocket knives and try to think outside the box. Unless your dad is an avid tie collector and seriously *lives* for ties, then avoid this played-out gift. Instead, get him something that says, “I see your hobbies and I respect them.” Failing that, our favorite unique gifts for dad at least say, “Hey, I tried, old man.”

Even if your dad says he doesn’t need anything, he deserves something cool and special, like a new gadget, a subscription box, or something that will keep him looking ageless for years to come. That’s why we’ve rounded up plenty of ideas for all types of dads, whether he has a green thumb, an affinity for craft beer, a massive music collection, or a deep appreciation for learning new skills and hobbies.

Remember that a gift doesn’t have to fit some sort of arbitrary dad stereotype for it to be a good fit for your dad. Consider his particular (and maybe even peculiar!) interests and let them guide you toward a gift that he’ll really love — and that will show your deep appreciation for all that he’s done for you.

To get you started ahead of the holiday shopping season, here are some of the Mashable team’s favorite dad gift ideas.
