iPadOS 18 ‘Math Notes’ can solve your handwritten equations. Here’s how to use it.

iPadOS 18, alongside iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and VisionOS 2, was highlighted at WWDC 2024. And guess what? For the first time ever, you don’t need to rely on a third-party app to use a calculator. Thanks to the new iPadOS 18, there’s now a new built-in Calculator app on supported iPads.

Within the Calculator app is a new feature called Math Notes. This utility detects your scribbled mathematical equations — written with a stylus like the Apple Pencil Pro — and it will solve it for you. But you may be wondering, “How do I use Math Notes?” The steps are simple.

You can currently test Math Notes via the iPadOS 18 developer beta update. However, keep in mind that this version is a raw, unrefined copy, so it may come with some risks. If you insist on updating to the iPadOS 18 developer beta, make sure you know how to back up your iPad.

  1. Tap on the new calculator button within the new Calculator app.

  2. A menu will appear with the words “Math Notes.” Tap on it.

  3. An empty, black field will appear.

  4. Jot down your equation with an Apple Pencil. The moment you scribble the equal sign (i.e., “=”) in the field, Math Notes will solve it for you.

Interestingly, you can change any part of the equation — and Math Notes will update the results almost instantaneously.

Plus, you can use hover on any number — and a ruler-like interface will appear. You can use Apple Pencil to drag it to the left or the right. Depending on which direction you go, the selected number will either go down or up. As the number increases or decreases in value, the solution will change in real time.

iPadOS 18’s Math Notes currently supports iPad Pro and iPad Air with the M1 chip and newer. The expected release date window for the final, ready-for-primetime version of iPadOS 18 is some time in September.
