English-dubbed ‘The Boy and the Heron’ trailer invites us into Miyazaki’s latest fantasy

The latest trailer for Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is here, and it’s putting its English language cast on full display.

Featuring the voices of the likes of Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh, The Boy and the Heron transports us to World War II-era Japan, where Mahito (voiced by Luca Padovan) grieves the loss of his mother. When he and his father (voiced by Christian Bale) move to the countryside, Mahito will find more than a change of scenery. Instead, he’ll be catapulted into a mysterious new world of wizards, strange spirits, and talking birds — including an ornery grey heron (voiced by Pattinson). What follows is an epic journey that’s part rollicking adventure, part moving exploration of grief.

The Boy and the Heron hits theaters in both Japanese and the English dub Dec. 8.
